Veteran’s Day Prayers

Donate time or money to help our homeless Veterans. Let’s remember their service. Thank you for our veterans, Oh Lord, and bless each and every one of them today and every day. Whether they are home or far away, protect and love them. May all of our Vets have a comfortable, pleasant, happy home.  Please guide them to it in the name of Jesus. Thank you, Heavenly Father.

“Barack Obama is tackling the issue with his “Opening Doors: Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness,” an initiative that aims to end chronic and veteran homelessness by 2015. He’s working to meet this goal by mainstreaming housing, health, education and human service programs. On any given night last January, 67,495 homeless veterans were sleeping on the streets, a 56 percent decline since the president took office, according to the Annual Homelessness Assessment Report to Congress.

“Under the leadership of President Obama, we are witnessing unprecedented national unity in the campaign to end and prevent veteran homelessness,” Patrick Ryan, Chairman of the NCHV Board of Directors, said in a press release. “The progress we have seen from the federal agencies, the Congress, the community partners NCHV represents, and the American people in just the last three years give rise to the expectation that this campaign will succeed.”

Hypocrisy Lecture

I was reading through some various blogs about the aftermath of the election when I stumbled across this blog that made me so mad, I had to promise myself that I would not post this until a few hours later; I wanted to make sure I was cooled off to edit before posting a response.

I can’t share with you directly the various parts of the blog that angered me, but suffice it to say, check out numbers 6,7,8, 9, and 10.

Talk about ticking me off!!

I don’t want to get into legal trouble copying and pasting any part of a blog without permission, so just have a look at the blog in question and judge for yourself.

Paraphrasing what I read into a nutshell, the gentleman writing the offensive material doesn’t understand how any born-again, evangelical Christian could vote for President Obama, instead of the “pro-life, pro-marriage candidate.” He proceeds to state that he believes the real Christians (apparently) need to school those of us who have gone so far astray — because it is our fault that Governor Mitt Romney wasn’t elected. You see, we’re not real Christians, and we need proper teaching by the church and our pastor so that we start voting to elect biblical candidates who stand for the bible and the church.

Well, there we go again … two out of three of the primary worst sins that the right always scream about, (abortion, gay marriage, and Israel), seem to be the culprit yet again. Can we say “beat on a dead horse?”

While the dead horse is being beaten, I’ll try to keep my cool internally and simply say once again that I just can’t believe the blinders on these people who think like this. How on earth do these Christian folks think that the sin they are engaging in, in their blind self-righteousness, is one whit better than these three sins that they keep harping on?

Do they not grasp that God clearly said in His word:

  • Do not kill
  • Do not lie
  • Do not steal
  • Do not make an idol out of money
  • Do not treat the poor badly; instead share what you have with them
  • That forgiveness you show others is how you’ll be forgiven —  or in other words, exhibit mercy.
  • Be good stewards of the earth
  • Do not commit adultery

How do those who consider themselves to be part of the religious right justify killing men and women through unnecessary war for profit? How do they justify invading other countries and stealing their oil or land? How do they justify murdering in cold blood mentally ill and disturbed men and women through capital punishment if they claim to be so “pro-life?” What about the blood on their hands through supporting unnecessary war and the murdering of people via the state, whose murder they supported in their “eye for an eye” rage?

What about the way that these good Christian folk worship the almighty dollar? The whole of the Republican party is built around this worship of Mammon and it’s ugly, really ugly. How about the many times some of these Christians have remarried, thus committing adultery? Ooops…

How do good Christians justify not sharing what they have with others so that others can have health care? Why aren’t they willing or able to gladly pay their taxes so that the poor, elderly, infirmed, and disabled don’t starve to death? It’s akin to the tithe, in my personal opinion.

How do they justify “an eye for an eye” when Jesus told us that the two most important commandments were to love God with all of one’s heart and one’s mind, and to love they neighbor as thy self? How do these Christian people justify what they are doing to our earth, to the environment, to nature, and our wildlife through their greed and love of money?

These oh-so-fine Christians lecture us about abortion but they don’t care if an unwanted baby is able to eat or survive once it’s out of the womb! They don’t care if the same child grows up abused by its drug-addicted mother and is abandoned to the system. How many of these unwanted kids have they adopted? They don’t have anymore mercy for the woman struggling on her own to raise these unwanted children. All they can appear to do is bitch about how much she is costing them!

Yet these good Christians can fuss about gay marriage and homosexuality but say next to nothing about the millions of Christian men and women who are regularly surfing internet pornography on their home computers every single night, or having adultery with their neighbor’s wife in church; (this is called “LUST” by the way, in case the sin doesn’t spring immediately to mind).

Don’t these individuals have enough of their own sin to study on instead of worrying about how I vote?

Jesus had a word or two for these arrogant, allegedly good Christian people:

“Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.” – Matt 23:24

Rolling my eyes ....

Rolling my eyes …. (Photo credit: Heather Carpenter Costello)

The arrogance of one Christian to peer at another Christian and tell them that they aren’t really Christian because they voted for one sinner over the other, that because in their holier-than-thou opinion, one candidate’s platform of sin is worse than the other! Is this not the craziest thing you’ve ever read or heard? I can’t even believe it. It sickens me, frankly. I have little to no respect for this kind of idiocy.

Sin is sin, people. God finds telling lies to be an abomination! Seems both of these candidates were doing plenty of that this election season and none of these good Christians had much of a problem with lying, that I read.

I wonder what Jesus thought about the Pharisees. Seriously, do you think God was impressed with their “holiness?” They didn’t recognize where they were guilty of probably worse sin than what they kept yapping about as if they were some model of godly purity. Sounds like these same good Christians to me.

Yes, six point four million self-described “evangelicals” did vote for Obama and I’m very glad that they did. These “professing Christians” put Obama back into office. Yes, we did, and I have no doubt that we will do so again with the next Democrat if the religious right Republicans don’t change their tune and get a clue before the next election!

(This was “righteous anger” expressed here in this post, if you’re wondering; I don’t expect any likes on it).

The Religious Wrong!

The Religious WrongWho would have ever thought?

Christians  in 2012 actually have options to choose from!

Despite some Christian blogs that demand we vote as they believe we should if we’re really Christian, we can listen to the Holy Spirit that clearly tells us right from wrong.

For many years, as Christians, the religious right was our destiny. I know it was hard to reconcile this with what the bible actually says. There are contradictions galore within what is being  preached on the right and what the bible tells us.  It’s especially confusing for new Christians and Christians who are passionate about following the teachings of Jesus Christ in every aspect of their lives, but believe it or not, things are changing.

God is a gentleman, as we know. He never forces Himself upon anyone. We have free will.  It’s the same thing when it comes to our vote. We have options! People can try to control our minds and heart and tell us how to vote as followers of Jesus Christ; we internally know what Jesus would do, though. We don’t have to blindly follow wolves in sheep’s clothing.

We don’t have to force our hearts and minds into the mold of the religious right anymore. We don’t have to try to make sense of worshiping at the altar of Mammon. We don’t have to break our backs trying to line up false teaching with what Jesus demonstrated for us in the bible by His own actions.  We don’t have to try and understand how anyone in good conscience can support destroying the planet through  greed and selfishness, over tenderly caring for what God put us in charge of. We don’t have to believe that government shouldn’t care what happens to the weakest and most vulnerable among us. We no longer have to justify murdering men and women in needless war for profit. We can say no to the cold blooded murder of sick and mentally ill men and women through the electric chair and lethal injection. We don’t even have to cage men and women like animals; we could instead rehabilitate them.

We can support health care for every human being because they absolutely deserve it and yes, should be entitled to it! We can care about men and women, despite their differences in points of view, who they love,  how they worship or choose not to worship. We can be a part of something that really is loving, tolerant,  and merciful, that doesn’t just talk the godly talk but actually lives and walks the godly walk.

We can be living examples of Jesus Christ in every aspect of our lives and not suffer cognitive dissonance because the point of view of the religious right doesn’t line up with the red-letter words within the Holy Bible! We can join a bipartisan educational effort to reduce and offer valid alternatives to abortion. We can be more about the love of Jesus Christ and showing that love for every man, woman, and child, no matter their income, race, or class. We don’t have to be dominionist and force others to believe as we do; God doesn’t work like that. Let people make their choice. Actually be and act like Jesus Christ. Imagine that!

This election, tomorrow,  get out and vote your real conscience! Listen to the  Holy Spirit within you instead of a political party and vote as God desires you to vote. Christians, we don’t have to be bullied into compliance with a movement that is not truthfully like Jesus! We don’t have to celebrate war and death and claim that we’re  pro-life, bowing to hypocrisy and knowing it deep inside our hearts.

Stand up and make your vote count. Make your voice heard!

See you at the polls!

And I believe God will bless our America.

President Obama’s Benghazi Accusers

I always thought that here in America, we are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law; apparently, this is no longer the case based upon what I see happening to the president of the United States of America. I’ve watched this go on and really haven’t said a lot about it until tonight, primarily because I didn’t want to add to the chaotic mess this has become. Unfortunately, though, I can no longer keep my thoughts to myself because I’m irritated, frustrated, and saddened,  so I’m going to get these yucky feelings off of my chest by ranting a little and try to make sense of the entire horrific situation.

Former Arkansas Governor, Mike Huckabee, speak...

I just finished viewing another segment of Fox News and was surprised to see Mike Huckabee, a well known and thoroughly respected Christian, and Senator John McCain, former presidential candidate, making and alluding to the accusations that President Obama is guilty of and responsible for allowing four people to die without any mercy. Both men were accusing the president of blatant neglect, claiming that it looks like he could have done something to stop these men from dying, and accusing that he merely sat by and watched them die.

What I found difficult to understand and stomach was why these men decided to try him in the court of public opinion, making these many ugly accusations without any real proof. There have been numerous rumors, much speculation, and countless stories about what occurred to these poor men that were murdered. They were part of the CIA and were attacked and killed by terrorists, allegedly. There are so many different stories that an investigation has already begun and may conclude by December of this year.

English: Official portrait of Senator LIndsey ...

Apparently, this is not good enough for President Obama’s numerous accusers, though; they simply cannot wait until a full and thorough investigation is complete. Senator Lindsey Graham wants his questions answered right now! Yesterday! In fact, he demands it.

How dare we have an election without all of this being cleared up immediately!??

It makes for good fodder to assassinate the character of the president with, and hopefully these accusations will steer away as many people as possible from casting their vote for the president in the interim, thus killing two birds with one stone.

English: John McCain official photo portrait.

I have to wonder how good Christian men and women allow themselves to sink to the level that this implies. These people know the law and some of them are actually lawyers and are in the senate too. They should know that everyone is innocent until he has had the right to a trial by a jury of his peers, if he’s being accused and formally charged with neglect of duty or whatever it is that they want to lay at his door.

But noooooooooo. Instead, it’s the usual court of public opinion and a good tongue-lashing with the written and spoken word that the president apparently deserves this time.  Fifty lashes of the tongue maybe?  Or perhaps they can just beat him down until he’s pure mush, kind of like the movie “2016, Obama’s America” did.

I view all of this character assassination of the president with a sick feeling in my heart and stomach. To see people I should be able to admire and look up to acting like this and being so unjust is very difficult for me; I sincerely do not understand this behavior. What’s worse though, is that I am watching an alleged Christian like Mike Huckabee play politics with the deaths of four men just to swindle some extra votes for the right side of the aisle at the last hour.

I’m sure some could justify this by the dishonest claim that this is “righteous judgment,”  that in their opinion there is good reason to accuse President Obama and try him in the media as they have, without allowing him any way to officially defend himself.  What it’s really all about, however, is the attempt at destroying his chances for re-election by playing politics as dirty as humanly possible in order to win this election. The desperation these men are driven to knows no bounds!

I believe I’m going to have redefine what the word “Christian” means after this election season, based upon what I’ve viewed during the whole of it. Let me tell you, it’s been very disillusioning for this Christian to have to observe and try and make sense of.

I guess a lot of us have a long way to go to be Christ-like. I’ve always thought I couldn’t even come to close to behaving like Jesus, but when I see Christians who are certainly older in Christ than I am, acting the way that they are right now, I feel pretty good about how I’m doing in my walk with Christ after all.

Our American President

Abba, Father….

I come to You today to ask you to watch over and bless President Barack Obama, your son, and the President of the United States of America. He is running for re-election, for another four years. He started a work here in our country, Father, but was not able to complete the good work he began. He needs more time, Lord. I believe his heart is in the right place, God, and that he loves you.

Despite so many of your followers claiming that he is a closeted Muslim and not a Christian, I’m sure that they are mistaken. I think he’s a good man that is attempting to do the best he can within the constraints he has. I know he loves you; I sense that he loves you. Help him to serve you better, Father, and help him to win this election, Lord, if it be thy will, in the holy name of Jesus.

He loves the poor, Father. He cares about the middle class. He cares about the people who are sick, old, weak, infirmed, disabled, and struggling. He cares about the least of us and has compassion. Michelle Obama, his wife, cares about those of us who struggle daily — the single moms, the young children who are stressed through no fault of their own. See his heart, oh Lord, and guide President Obama.

A Good Sentiment

A Good Sentiment (Photo credit: Joe Wilcox)

Father, there are things that need to change here. We need to reduce and stop abortion and help President Obama to see that we have to find policy that will reduce this horrific practice. Through education, we can reduce abortion except in cases of serious emergency. Help President Obama to become the godly man you want him to be in every facet of his life. Please help him, if you give him this next four years, to lead each one of us in America into a bipartisan way of dealing with one another. Help the president to get things done, according to your will, God. Help us not to have any more war. I know you have  your hand on his life, Father, and I trust that all will go according to your plan on November 6.

President Barack Obama and the First Lady Mich...

Help those who are angry, who dislike and resent President Obama. Help them to accept that he needs more time and deserves another four years. Help them to begin to truly have compassion for those who have less than they do; help them  to want to share what they have with others, so that none of us suffers.  Help us all to learn to have a spirit like Jesus has.  Jesus asked us to give and share everything we have. On earth, Jesus healed the sick and had compassion for the least among us. Help your people to recognize that people’s health matters more than their money. There is nothing more important than our lives, except you, God. Help them to see that loving money is not what God admires within our natures. Take away the greed, Heavenly Father, and bring back the compassion within the hearts of all Americans.

I turn this presidential election over to you, Father. I ask that you watch over and protect President Obama, and that you bring about your will regarding Governor Mitt Romney as well. I’m putting this matter into your hands now, Lord, and I will not take it back up again. I accept however this turns out and will glorify you no matter what occurs. Please allow nothing to stand in the way of your will, Father, because your will is always what is best for our country and the world.  I ask you these things in the name of Jesus.

Thank you, Lord.

Your loving daughter,

Adrienne

Bearing False Witness

Barack Obama

Barack Obama (Photo credit: jamesomalley)

You know, when you spread rumors and gossip that isn’t true, you’re a liar. This is called “bearing false witness against one’s neighbor. ” God doesn’t appreciate this much. His word tells us that this is a fact:

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” — Exodus 20:16

“Do not spread false reports. Do not help a wicked man by being a malicious witness.” — Exodus 23:1

“Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow is the man who gives false testimony against his neighbor.”– Proverbs 25:18

There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.
—Proverbs 6:16–19

Unfortunately, sometimes even Christians will do absolutely anything to help the political candidates of their choice achieve a goal of being elected. They will even spin lies, or twist and stretch the truth; they will share those same lies through forwarded emails, videos, pictures, rumors, and gossip, with others.

Here are numerous falsehoods that are blatant lies:

  1. Obama is a Muslim
  2. Obama’s ring says “There is no god but Allah..”
  3. Obama is not a citizen of America.
  4. Obama will not recite the pledge of allegiance
  5. Obama and Michelle are getting a divorce
  6. Obama is the antichrist
  7. etc., etc., etc…..

You can view the truth instead of all of the many, many lies HERE.

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama

It is best if a Christian is not certain that something is truth, that he or she not spread and perpetrate a lie, mis-truth, or random rumor.

God is aware of our sins and He is especially aware of the intent of our heart. We are accountable when we try to harm someone else through absolute lies and skewed half-truths, including the President of the United States of America.

Are you guilty of lying, spreading false rumors, or skewed truth? Go before our Father who art in Heaven and ask for forgiveness, and then go and sin no more.

This wonderful writer is definitely worth reading and thinking upon. She points out some very important considerations about reading the bible and living life as Jesus instructed us to. Enjoy Rebecca Trotter and her blog, The Upside Down World!

Rebecca Trotter's avatarThe Upside Down World

Way back in college, I took a class on the history of religion in America. One day during a discussion about some Christian evangelist, one of the other students offered this criticism of the man’s work: “it’s like he’s actually trying to be like Jesus.” I sat there a bit bug-eyed. Can you imagine – a Christian who was actually trying to be like Jesus? Whatever could that evangelist have been thinking? (Clearly, not everyone I who attended my college was the best or the brightest.) But the reality is that a lot of people – including a good number of Christians – are as unclear on the concept as this young man back in my college days was. How else to explain the fact that many people read the bible the exact same way that the Pharisees did rather than trying to read it like Jesus did? (For anyone…

Angry Political Christians

The following is an excellent article on the behavior of a Christian during a political election season. It is a must-read for every Christian and we should each meditate on it at length, and perhaps even pray about it.

“How should a follower of Christ engage in the political discourse? Dr. Gregory Boyd has said some controversial things but, in my humble opinion, this is not one of them.

“Christians are not to seek “power over” others – by controlling governments, passing legislation or fighting wars. Christians should seek to have “power under” others – winning others hearts by sacrificing for those in need.”

That is indeed what Jesus did. That is EXACTLY how a group of men and women in the first century with NO political power turned the world upside down. They sacrificially served others.

Dr. Boyd also noted that “America is not the light of the world and the hope of the world. The light of the world and the hope of the world is Jesus Christ.”

Hard to argue with that. I love America. I don’t think there has ever been a more benevolent world power. Like a lot of people of faith I once thought that electing the “right” politicians would change the culture. I was wrong. The fact is that government and laws can only restrain. Paul had a lot of thoughts on that in his letter to the Romans. Jesus can change the heart and change behavior from the inside out. I am saddened when I see good, well-intentioned people thinking that more education and regulation will solve our problems. I am certainly not against education but I would point out that it has been the brightest and best that got us into such a mess on Wall Street. The problem is not lack of knowledge but a lack of understanding of the hearts of men and women. We all have a nature that needs to be changed. We deny that at our own peril and the peril of our culture.

I am not smart enough to decide what God has called people to do. If He has placed a desire for people to impact the culture through political action I am not about to question their motives. But I do believe that those of us who claim the name of Jesus need to communicate our views with grace and compassion.

I am active politically. I study issues and candidates and I always vote. I give to causes that I believe in and I would be willing to work for a candidate that shared my goals for our country.

But I get nervous about using the church as a political base. God’s Word taught effectively will mold followers of Jesus that will view social issues wisely. My goal is to introduce people to Jesus, disciple them into a real relationship with Him and then watch as the Holy Spirit changes what my sermonizing cannot.

The body of Christ is about Jesus. About being a good citizen that respects authority. And about demonstrating His amazing grace to a desperately needy world. The message should be grace, redemption and the forgiveness available to everyone. All parties are welcome at the foot of the cross. We need to spend more time there…for the good of America.

That sets the stage for today’s gentle plea. May I challenge my fellow followers of Jesus to show grace in the current debate? I confess that I get angry when I witness the personal attacks on people who are simply trying to be heard. I know that my friends who are Democrats (yep, I have a bunch of them) get angry when people of faith blindly forward untrue emails about President Obama. We must do better with the dialogue. My Republican friends get furious when their candidate’s character is assailed.

I was guilty of that sin with President Clinton. I said ugly things about him. I did not pray for him. I did not trust God consistently to accomplish His plan and I thought that my politics had to prevail for God’s plan to prevail. How arrogant on my part. Once again I was wrong. I was obsessed with politics and it was dangerously close to idolatry. I am sure I crossed that line at times. As we head into some spirited debate I am begging my fellow followers of Christ to be graceful in your debate. Things will be said that are maddening, unfair and mean. Responding in kind damages the name of Jesus. Solomon wrote these words that are so timely today.

A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare. The tongue of the wise makes knowledge appealing, but the mouth of a fool belches out foolishness. (Proverbs 15, NLT)

And later this wisdom is written.

Patient persistence pierces through indifference; gentle speech breaks down rigid defenses. (Proverbs 25:15, NLT)

Chris Rice lyrically paraphrases these wise words with the song’s chorus.

Everybody take a breath
why are all your faces red
we`re missin` all the words you said
you don`t have to yell

You cannot change the minds and hearts of others by strident arguing and yelling. You cannot change the minds of some with a 2 by 4 up the side of the head…as tempting as that may be. You can change a few hearts and minds by demonstrating the grace and good news of the Gospel of Jesus. I love the United States deeply. But I do not believe that the hope of the world is democracy even though I believe there is no better system of government. The hope of the world is Jesus. That is my message. I want to be a good citizen but I must be a grace filled representative for Christ.
