Prayer & the Brain

It’s just as I thought it would be….

National Day of Prayer

Prayer is beneficial to our brains and our lives. There are many wonderful effects that prayer brings to our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.  Advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Prayer is good for us physically because it lowers stress, blood pressure, and centers or balances us. It’s akin to meditation in that it promotes calm and a soothing atmosphere. It doesn’t matter what belief system you’ve chosen either. The fact is that research shows that prayer is good for us.

We slow down and become still and quiet when we pray. We take time to know ourselves better and to develop a relationship with something greater, omnipotent, and more knowledgeable than ourselves. We are less inclined to emotional depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders. Prayer even helps restore memory and decrease  Alzheimer’s!  Prayer changes the brain, the research shows, for the better.

What Prayer Does to Your Brain

Monday, 19 Dec 2011 05:14 PM

By S. A. Nickerson

Millions of Americans pray — and believe that prayer works.

In fact, one recent poll found that 84% of U.S. adults claim they’d prayed in the past week.

But many people believe that prayer has no scientific validity, and is only wishful or magical thinking.

The Newsmax Health team wanted to know the truth about prayer. Can modern science actually explain prayer? How does praying affect the brain? And what benefits, if any, does prayer really offer people … physically, mentally, or emotionally?

To this end, they went out to the scientific and medical community to learn the potential benefits of prayer. The results were so startling that they created a free video presentation on the scientific benefits of prayer to share exactly what they discovered.

Video: Prayer Changes Your Brain in 4 Astonishing Ways

This video reveals how prayer actually changes four distinct areas of the human brain: the frontal lobe, the anterior cingulate, the parietal lobe, and the limbic system.

It also details how a specific amount of prayer time per day can help prevent memory loss, mental decline, and even dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Plus, it covers 47 scientifically proven benefits of prayer, including pain relief, reduced risk of death from heart attack or stroke, lessened anxiety or depression, improved immune function, and more.

And last but not least, it warns of a specific prayer pitfall that can actually cause illness if care is not taken.

According to Travis Davis, Newsmax Health Publisher, this video does not promote any specific religion or spiritual practice, but it does shed light on a practice that 3 out of 4 Americans engage in on a regular basis — a practice basically ignored by the mainstream media.

As Davis notes, “Most people are not aware of the emerging field of neurotheology, the scientific study of the relationship between the brain and spiritual phenomena. We wanted to help introduce this groundbreaking scientific work to the public.”

Christmas Eve Ponderings

The Gospel Road

Narrated by Johnny Cash

This video I’m sharing tonight, The Gospel Road, is a beautiful video that is the first of seven short parts. You can click on the others if you want to watch them after this initial part one.

This is a special video that is narrated by Johnny Cash. It’s so different and sincere. It’s really meaningful and a video that demonstrates to music who Jesus Christ really was when He walked the earth, before ascending to the right hand of the Father.

Christmas Eve has been kind of a bittersweet time in my life. I lost my mother one year ago today, this morning. I still miss her a great deal. There have been a lot of changes in my life in this last year since my mother died. I’ve grown immensely as a Christian. I’ve met new people and made some new friends in Christ. I’ve also met people that aren’t Christian, whom I’ve become fond of, who I respect, who appear to respect me.  All in all, it’s been good.

Christmas Eve, chromolithography

I was a member of a small online community for several years that meant the world to me, but that changed a few months ago. I was quite hurt by what happened there and resentful at first, but that uprooting created great opportunity for me that was surprising, and I’ve found a new place to write and share my ongoing daily spiritual journey with Jesus Christ. This has been an incredible blessing for me.

I have loved the people I’ve been meeting here at WordPress.com, who comment and push the like button on most of my posts, who regularly read me. All of you have surprised me in your wisdom and the love within your hearts.  Your maturity, your intellectualism, your sincerity — it’s more than I ever dreamed. I feel like I belong here among you and that I’ve found a home. I made my way here along a virtual path and was welcomed by you and it’s a good feeling, a blessed feeling. It’s wonderful to have you reading what I write and sharing your own beautiful writings with me. You are all so creative!

WordPress.com is wonderful in the way it has challenged me to write regularly due to Post a Day 2011. The discipline this demanded has been incredible and it’s been a great commitment that I’ve just flourished under.

Hundreds of candles brought to a Christian Cro...

And now it’s Christmas time and I’m blessed by the true meaning of Jesus Christ within my life, and the knowing that I’m never alone, that I’ve been made whole and clean of my sins in the sight of God, my Father in Heaven.  Thanks to the birth of Jesus Christ, I am having the greatest relationship of my existence, and it is a great adventure that never bores me or leaves me berefit.

My daughter and I attended a beautiful Christmas Eve candlelight service tonight that was touching and unique. We met many new neighbors at that church that we haven’t been introduced to before. We were welcomed and treated kindly and we’ll probably return regularly on Sundays there because we felt so at home.

It’s a small church, but I felt the presence of God within those people and we were able to just be ourselves. The evening was truly about the love of Jesus Christ, and sharing the beauty of loving God, together with the people who attended. This is what Christmas is really all about.

Christmas gifts.

I hope all of you are able to experience a wonderful, pleasant Christmas morning. I hope that whatever you are doing, or whomever you are with, that you’re happy, warm, and comforted by your surroundings. I hope you are able to share a nice Christmas meal and that you can give something to someone else, as you’ve been freely given to.

May God bless and keep all of you, and Merry Christmas to you.

Hugs,

Adrienne

Almost Christmas at Our House

cup of coffee

My twelve-year-old daughter surprised me this morning as I was having my usual cup of coffee. She said in a kind of wistful way, “I love our little home, Mom, don’t you? Don’t you just love it?”

I had to smile, despite the fact that I normally don’t smile a lot when I first get up, until that first cup of coffee is at least half way emptied. (I’m not a morning person). I was quick to nod at her though, and chuckle a little. She went back to doing whatever it was she was doing, and I drifted away into a haze of cluttered thoughts, pondering on the “little house” in question.

My place is actually more like a compound, to be truthful.

English: Lord Clarences Log Cabin

Though it doesn’t sit upon a lot of real property, the acreage is enough to make the sprawling space within the log cabin into a kind of maze of conflicting halls and passages. One of my long time friends looked puzzled and murmured, “this is a hobbit home,” as he laughed a bit and wandered around, getting the lay of the land. Guests have often gotten lost when they tried to make their way back out, getting confused about which way they entered. We have many entrances and exits here, and there are several other residences upon the property as well, which probably makes everything even more disconcerting, but we love it.

I probably should mention, I’m a landlord, so I have several tenants here, which is enjoyable but then again, sometimes it is not.

In our log cabin, my child has a lovely upstairs bedroom that she adores, with a large bay window next to a window seat. It overlooks the front yard, and she’s just beginning to be old enough to really appreciate it. Her room is a cozy A-frame loft that houses her Playstation 2, countless games, her television,VCR, and a little cubby where her full size bedroom set dwells.

She requested a new comforter set for Christmas because she’s almost a teenager and has insisted upon redecorating, so we had to choose matching pillows to go along with the eight piece set. She’s pretty excited about this gift most of all, I think. It’s the first time she’s ever really been interested in the actual furnishing and decorating of the house or her room. She’s really growing up — far too quickly as far as I’m concerned. Wish I could slow the race of time a little and really savor it before she’s turned eighteen before my very eyes!

christmas 2007

Our dining room table downstairs is set with brand new Christmas dishware, as I’m a decorative plate collector (nothing extravagant) and I found some delightful plates from the dollar store the other night! Our table has an array of gingerbread cookies, some chocolate, and various other Christmas goodies to choose from, sitting on it.

There is a small pine tree sitting on the Christmas tablecloth that was the easiest thing to deal with, since my leg was seriously injured. I’ve been unable to get around for the last year. We just weren’t up to trying to dig old faithful out of the storage room mothballs, with my leg still in the brace. It’s a pretty big tree and heavy — so we’re settling for the little pine tree, which we’ve decorated up just a bit. It’s lit up and sparkling merrily.

Our numerous beloved animals have a large amount of rawhide bones under the tiny tree. They are looking forward to devouring these on Christmas morning. I enjoyed picking these out, though I was somewhat horrified at the prices; nevertheless, these pets are part of our family and they won’t be left out of things this Christmas. With all of the pets inside because of the cold outside, it really feels like we’ve got our own “nativity” going on here, sometimes.

English: Palm house in Łódź, turtles (1)

The two wild turtles I rescued two years ago have been blessed with a special helping of floating food sticks and a calcium stick treat that they love to nibble on. They’ll receive some red-leaf lettuce on Christmas morning, as well.

They will also bask inside in their indoor pond within our den, under their new 100 watt basking light, which they enjoy sunning themselves under until the weather warms up and they go back outside to their outdoor habitat and pond in the back, in May.

English: Winton: a window of Victoria Park Met...

Christmas Eve we’ll venture out at some point to a Christmas Eve service we’re attending at a neighboring church we’ve not been to in years, but they are kind enough to have an evening service on Christmas Eve so we’re going to stop in and worship and maybe visit with some of our neighbors. My little girl is pretty excited about attending a service there as it’s not the usual church we go to.

I’ll probably put the turkey on after the service so that there isn’t too much cooking to worry about on Christmas Day. We’ll just have to warm it up while we’re cooking the other various creations.

Later on, tomorrow night, I will sit in front my television and watch Christmas movies with my little girl. The flat screen was a gift to myself after I injured my leg. I finally broke down and got it, despite the  twenty-something year old Sony that I was loath to part with, but now I’m not sorry after watching this beauty. High definition TV is the greatest on one of these flat screen’s and makes for quite the telly watching experience; I could never go back to the old TV’s after experiencing it; I’m now thoroughly spoiled.

Anyway, my little girl and I will most likely watch the Ten Commandments, The Greatest Story Ever Told, and various others fave religious movies. We’ll discuss the religious connotations of the films, while I answer an endless array of questions from this young mind I cherish. Finally, we’ll go to sleep, because she’ll be terribly excited about opening up the remaining presents that she doesn’t know about. (At some point, I’ll have to wrap all of those. I hate wrapping presents, but she loves them wrapped, like most kids).

christmas candles on the morning table

We’re going to get up Christmas morning, open our gifts, and have a leisurely, laid back day cooking and just enjoying ourselves with one another and our animals. It’s going to be a quiet Christmas, but I don’t mind that at all. We’re ready for some peaceful, quiet times, just savoring not having to run around at a maddening pace. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday this Christmas and can enjoy their loved ones, or maybe just spending time enjoying your home and the opportunity to relax.

Erosion of Religious Rights in America

In my last blog here, I began to communicate through comments with several people on the topic of the erosion of religious rights in America. As promised to Mikel, the Skeptical Seeker, here to follow up, are numerous specific examples of religious rights that have been or are currently under attack, or are being eroded, due to a host of differing reasons.

American Civil Liberties Union

These following sources go into an extraordinary amount of detail and list countless actual filings on behalf of the ACLU, wherein it has had to defend the religious rights of our American citizens, and not just Christian citizens, either. The ACLU has had to protect the religious rights of so many due to an increasingly obvious erosion of religious rights in this nation.

I have also included sources that discuss religious freedom being attacked on college campuses; these examples are discussed below at length.

In yet another source below, an astronomer says that he was denied a job because of religion.

There is also a source from a Catholic Arch-bishop who is concerned about religious rights in America, who lists numerous problems he is finding, in detail.

He is joined by several other writers who are also speaking out due to what they feel is occurring in America, as far as the religious rights of our American citizens are concerned.

The various sources presented here show us the validity of this issue, based upon the opinions of several within this nation, and they are all worthy, imo, of at least a scan of your time. I was rather surprised, to say the least, as I had no idea the problem was this extensive.

In my personal blog here, I’ve only written about a few occasions of religious expression being under attack, but I hadn’t even begun to touch the surface of the apparent problems. This issue must be addressed before it becomes even more serious.

The only way to address it is with our vote as a citizen of the United States of America. We have to have a president at the helm of this country who is in favor of and insists upon protecting the religious rights of our citizens, no matter their religion, or lack thereof. Our religious rights and freedom of religious expression must always be protected.

One Nation Under God

America’s religious heritage cannot be denied…

It should not be denied.

U.S Postage Stamp, 1957

America’s heart is one nation under God. The majority of its citizens still believe that this is so. Yes, America allows all to worship or not worship, as they want. Each is entitled to his or her own spiritual beliefs. No one has the right to curtail group or personal expression of our spirituality. We were always able to express ourselves in this nation’s past and it hurt no one. Why should this change?

Separation of church and state does not mean squelching the group or personal right of freedom of religious expression, wherever or when that may take place. The Constitution never said anything of the kind.  The intentional misinterpretation of it to fulfill an agenda will forever cause a breach between citizens of this country.

Freedom Of Religion!

English: Detail of Preamble to Constitution of...

Are we beginning to see a pattern developing here in America, readers?

Have we noticed yet that anti-religious groups are coming out of the woodwork in droves? They are skittering and skattering around like worker bees in a well-organized “hive,” doing their master’s bidding. (I know the master is normally a mistress metaphorically speaking, but not so in this instance 😉 ).

If you haven’t yet grasped that religious rights are under attack in America, sit up and take notice. We have to reason this in when we vote in the next presidential election, unfortunately. The anti-religious aren’t playing around. This isn’t fun and games; it’s real war.

If you want religious freedom, wake up and pay attention before this right is removed. We don’t want “dominionism”  either, because that would be just as intrusive and dangerous to our religious rights under the constitution — but I don’t think we’re in danger of dominionism as much as we are in danger of those who are aggressive in their anti-theism and determination to do away with all religion, if they can get away with it.

I’m talking about the Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Chris Hitchens, and Daniel Dennett’s of this world. These kind of men have (had) an agenda that they have spread to our youth. They are converting the naïve and the innocent at a frighteningly rapid pace.

Don’t think so?  There are so many examples. Read here briefly if you want yet another.

Voters have no choice but to pay attention. This has been going on for a while. I prefer not to side with either Republican or Democrat, and honestly  feel that both parties are a mockery of what Christian America should applaud, but I do have to take notice that there is a clear attack on religion in progress.  In America, without the freedom of religious expression, we as Christians are bound and gagged as to our primary purpose and calling by Jesus Christ our Lord.

We are to carry out the Great Commission.  Once we are completely silenced legally, antichrist will be on the horizon and there will be little else that we can do to help those who do not believe. Our time is now to stand up, band together, and fight for what we believe in. It is eventually going to be too late once we are officially silenced as a body.

Air Force Will Not Remove Holiday Display  By Todd Starnes/TWITTER Travis Air Force Base has decided they will not remove or relocate a Nativity scene and a Menorah in spite of a threat from The Military Religious Freedom Foundation. “While we appreciate the concerns raised by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, the Office of the Air Force Judge Advocate General, upon review, concluded the inclusion of a Wing Chaplain sponsored Nativity Scene and Menorah as part of a broader, secular holiday seasonal display does not violate the establishment clause of the United States Constitution,” read a statement provided to Fox News & Commentary. The MRFF had threatened to sue Travis Air Force Base unless they removed or relocated the holiday display currently located on a major thoroughfare at the military installation.

Travis AFB Nativity – photo by MRFF “This conspicuous display of ritual objects is a clear endorsement of religion in violation of the Establishment clause of the First Amendment, and must either be removed from the premises or moved to a more appropriate location on the Air Force Base to ensure compliance with the United States Constitution,” wrote attorney Katherine Ritchey on behalf of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. The Nativity features figures representing the baby Jesus, the Virgin Mary, Joseph and the Wise Men. Adjacent to the Nativity is the Menorah. “There is no doubt that a reasonable person, upon viewing these two religious symbols, would believe that they convey anything but a religious message,” Ritchey wrote. The Military Religious Freedom Foundation accused the Air Force of endorsing ‘rituals and beliefs associated with that faith.” The MRFF said they received a letter from an anonymous airman complaining about the holiday decorations and what he called the “tyranny of the majority.”

“The presence of these clearly religious displays on the main corner of the base deeply concerns me. I am not alone in my feelings of distress,” the anonymous airman wrote. “I know many other people are similarly offended and confused.”

“I joined the military to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, not to spread the gospel,” the airman added. “I fear that the religious symbols so prominently displayed on my Air Force Base convey a different message.”

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, blasted the threat and called it “yet another flyby-attack on Christianity.”

“No one is forced to stand in front of the Nativity, and salute it, but people in this country should have the right to celebrate Christmas and what it means,” Perkins told Fox News & Commentary last week.

Travis AFB Menorah – photo by MRFF

Perkins cited a Gallup poll that suggested more than 95 percent of the nation celebrate Christmas – and a Pew Research poll that indicated 78 percent of Americans identify as Christian.

“Increasingly, people are saying it is time to stop the bombardment of our religious freedom by this zealous. Minority,” Perkins said.

That Dern’ Nativity Again

What’s a body to do?

Those crazy Texans just won’t stop, between their Baseball, Apple pie, Mom, God, Country, and Chevrolet, they aint budgin’…

The Athens townsfolk are all up in arms and it’s my best guess that the nativity isn’t going anywhere if they have anything to say about it.

I became aware of the update when I ventured over to another forum that I enjoy every now and then.  I discovered many fellow Texans cheering these folks on in their ongoing battle to save the nativity in Athens, TX, from the Freedom From Religion peeps.

Basically, I posted my feelings on the matter and got an amused response or two. Here’s what I said:

If the Freedom From Religion Foundation were successful somehow in removing our TX nativity scene, I wouldn’t be surprised if practically every house in that little town put up their own nativity and that town was covered over with em’! lol…..

There would be so many nativity scenes all over the place that people might even be driving around with them on top of their cars!

Go Texas! Keep the nativity flying high!

One way or another

——————–

WTKR-TV3
Thousands gathered in Texas to support a religious display that’s come under attack.

By the thousands the faithful arrived in Athens Town Square for what many called a holy war.

English: Do Not Mess with Texas road sign

“What God’s done for me, this is certainly what I can do for Him. ” Said Barbara Neff.

Follow NewsChannel 3 on Facebook

Up to five thousand people rallied around a Christmas nativity scene in front of the Henderson County Courthouse, blasting a Wisconsin atheist group’s efforts to get it removed.  Our fight, our relentlessness and our courage. Everything is bigger in Texas.

For many here though this is about far more than decorations. It’s about what they feel is a continued attack on their Christian faith.

“It’s time for us to stand together and protect the very principles that made this nation great from its birth. ” Said Pastor Nathan Lorick.

“We’ve become so busy with our lives that we’ve forgotten our first love. ”

Resembling more church service than protest.

“What we need Christians is to stand and say Jesus Christ is the only way.” Said Pastor Derek Rogers.

Thousands prayed in the town’s square.

“The name of Jesus Christ.”

The display’s critics feel the scene is offensive and believe church should be separated from government.

Freedom From Religion Foundation

The freedom from religion foundation has even threatened to sue. Other towns have scrubbed religion from their displays.

Yet Henderson County shows no signs of cracking down.

A clear display of its faith.

“Never expected God to send a message from Athens, but that’s what he’s doing. He’s sending a message.” Said Donna Stutts.

The Chain of Love

The Chain of Love

He was driving home one evening
In his beat up Pontiac
When an old lady flagged him down
Her Mercedes had a flat
He could see that she was frightened
Standing out there in the snow
‘Til he said I’m here to help you ma’am
By the way my name is Joe

She said I’m from St. Louis
And I’m only passing through
I must have seen a hundred cars go by
This is awful nice of you
When he changed the tire
And closed her trunk
And was about to drive away
She said how much do I owe you
Here’s what he had to say

You don’t owe me a thing, I’ve been there too
Someone once helped me out
Just the way I’m helping you
If you really want to pay me back
Here’s what you do
Don’t let the chain of love end with you

Well a few miles down the road
The lady saw a small cafe
She went in to grab a bite to eat
And then be on her way
But she couldn’t help but notice
How the waitress smiled so sweet
And how she must’ve been eight months along
And dead on her feet

And though she didn’t know her story
And she probably never will
When the waitress went to get her change
From a hundred dollar bill
The lady slipped right out the door
And on a napkin left a note
There were tears in the waitress’s eyes
When she read what she wrote

You don’t owe me a thing
I’ve been there too
Someone once helped me out
Just the way I’m helping you
If you really want to pay me back
Here’s what you do
Don’t let the chain of love end with you

That night when she got home from work
The waitress climbed into bed
She was thinkin’ about the money
And what the lady’s note had said
As her husband lay there sleeping
She whispered soft and low
Everything’s gonna be alright, I love you, Joe
