A Chicken & Dumpling’s Kinda-Week

A depressed Tom on the railroad tracks awaitin...

Image via Wikipedia

Last week was the kind of week that demands warm, comfort food. It’s chilly outside and is going to get down to about forty degrees here in Texas, overnight.

The entire last week has been a difficult one for me as I’ve felt a little out of sorts, maybe even bordering on depressed a wee bit. I tend to find myself feeling this way when I am frustrated due to feeling as if I am unable to communicate well; I can get just a little bummed and kind of retreat inward, I guess, when something bothers me.

Anyway, I got up this morning and had coffee and whipped up a mean batch of chicken and dumplings, heavy on the dumplings. My child is looking forward to a delicious late supper and is working on her history project at the moment. Bring on the cold weather; we’re all good here! I’m cheered up already. 🙂

Ancient Greeks and Egyptians praised chicken soup’s healing properties, and twenty-first century scientists have backed them up. One bowl gives your body much-needed liquids, electrolytes, protein, and nutrients. This homemade version is a better option than the sodium-filled canned soups.

WASHINGTON — Scientists say they have confirmed what grandmothers have known for centuries — that chicken soup is good for colds.

Chicken soup — as made by grandma — contains several ingredients that affect the body’s immune system, a team at the University of Nebraska Medical Center found.

Specifically, it has anti-inflammatory properties that could explain why it soothes sore throats and eases the misery of colds and flu, Dr. Stephen Rennard and colleagues said Monday.

“Chicken soup may contain a number of substances with beneficial medicinal activity,” the researchers wrote in their report, published in the journal Chest.

“My wife was making chicken soup one year for the Jewish holidays and we were talking about its effects on colds,” Rennard, a specialist in pulmonary medicine, said in a telephone interview.

“I said ‘well, maybe it has some anti-inflammatory effect,’ and she said ‘really?’ and I said ‘why not?’ and I said maybe we could find out in the lab.”

As it turned out, Rennard’s lab was well-suited to making such tests. “In the lab we study inflammation and injury and repair mechanisms in the lung as related to asthma and emphysema and so on,” he said.

So Rennard’s wife Barbara Rennard made up a batch of her grandmother’s chicken soup, which includes chicken, onions, sweet potato, parsnips, turnips, carrots, celery stems, and parsley. Rennard said his wife added no salt but did include matzo balls, a kind of dumpling.

Then they ran laboratory tests. Not only did they test the soup as a whole, but they separated out the components.

“These tests were in the laboratory and it doesn’t test (chicken soup) clinically in colds,” Rennard stressed.

Neutrophil movement stopped

They found that chicken soup and many of its ingredients helped stop the movement of neutrophils — white blood cells that eat up bacteria and cellular debris and which are released in great numbers by viral infections like colds.

Neutrophil activity can stimulate the release of mucous, which may be the cause of the coughs and stuffy nose caused by upper respiratory infections such as colds.

“All the ingredients were found to be inhibitory, including the boiled extract of chicken alone,” they wrote.

Rennard said vitamins and other agents in the ingredients could, plausibly, have biological action.

The researchers also went to the store and bought 13 different commercial brands of soup to test.

“About a third of them were more active than grandma’s soup,” Rennard said, adding that he could not remember which kinds of soup they were.

“One or two of them had very little activity at all. Vegetarian vegetable soup had some activity.”

To be safe, they also tested plain Omaha tap water which, to their relief, had no effect. “If tap water were active, that would be disturbing in a number of ways,” Rennard said.

Some researchers have suggested in the past that perhaps the steam from the soup, or the chicken fat, may play a role in soothing inflamed airways. Rennard said this was possible.

He also said there could be a “TLC” (tender, loving care) factor. “If you know somebody prepared soup for you by hand, that might have an effect,” he said.

Rennard said he had no immediate plans to test chicken soup any further. “I have no doubt that generations from now, people will read this and the only thing of interest will be the recipe,” he said.

“It really is good soup.”

Panning for Souls

As the world slowly continues its descent down into the depths of raw evil, how does the Christian remain able to teeter above the filth and degenerative wreckage of what used to be morality? How do we continue to love those who are in lockstep with Satan/evil?

There is repulsion within the realization of blind eyes that cannot and will not be opened. A desire to be away from it, to abandon, to shake the dust off of one’s feet and move forward is overwhelming, but with this, how not to lose the love?

English: "The Judas Kiss", (Mark 14:...

Image via Wikipedia

Jesus never did lose His love … even of those who carried out His murder. One of His own, Judas, betrayed Him. I believe He still loved, despite the betrayal.

As they beat and tortured Him, nailing Him to a gruesome death, Jesus loved and asked for their forgiveness.

How to be more like Jesus?

How did He do it?

The tendency as the world oozes downward is to find high ground and stay there, but as all decency is covered over in the cesspool, it is ever more important that we love even more and have compassion and empathy, as Jesus did.

We must not flinch from evil or allow the bile rising around us to paralyze or halt our flow. This was written and others have endured similarly. There is an end to it and time is short.

We are panning for souls.

Dan Patrick’s Ultrasound Abortion Law

Ultrasound

Ultrasound (Photo credit: mdurwin2)

I was watching the news this evening and saw a doctor discussing Dan Patrick’s sponsorship of the new ultrasound abortion law. This law, already mandatory in Texas, makes mandatory an ultrasound and thorough discussion about what is occurring in the abortion process, at length. An MD must do the ultrasound and make the fetal heartbeat available to the woman seeking the abortion.

On the news tonight, this doctor said that Dan Patrick’s law was tantamount to attempting to “block the abortion, make it rare, or make it a challenge to use services.” Dan Patrick disagrees and said it is akin to seeing that the woman is well-educated about all aspects of the abortion process and what it actually means.

I’m not sure how this could be a bad thing. How could there be anything whatsoever wrong with making a woman stop and think a little before ending the life of her child?

English: fetus sonogram

Image via Wikipedia

What if this law does make an abortion rare? How is that a negative thing? Don’t we all want this process to be rare as possible, as opposed to a daily thing or a medical process merely for convenience sake?
Pro-lifers want abortion to stop entirely but that is, frankly, unlikely at the present time; but this new law could make abortions something that people really consider before going through with them. Those who are pro-choice should have absolutely no problem with this law because it educates and offers the woman real, thorough choice. She makes her decision to take the life within her after coming “face to face,”(so-to-speak), with the life of that child and the real reality of its existence. How is this not a good thing?

Protrait of State Senator Dan Patrick of Texas

Image via Wikipedia

I don’t see how anyone could think this a negative unless they are attempting to support the deception of the woman seeking the abortion and support her ignorance and denial of the life within her. We need to know what life is and come face to face with that life before we cause it to cease to exist. Abortion should never become a “fast food” commodity that one “drives through” to purchase without a backward thought.

There is a baby’s life being destroyed through this “procedure.” That baby may be undergoing severe distress, pain, and horrific torture due to the procedure, depending upon how far along the mother is in her pregnancy. Women need to be completely informed about everything, in my opinion, before the procedure is made available to them. How can anyone deny this?

Bravo for this law and for offering women a twenty-four hour moment of clarity and self searching before they are legally allowed to take the life of their own child. If this prevents any abortions whatsoever, it has served its purpose, in my opinion.

An apology and stuff

I just wanted to apologize to many of you who have commented lately on my blogs or shared and I haven’t made the time to reply until tonight. I could offer countless excuses for my lapse, but suffice it to say, real life intervenes along with its many demands.

I read every single comment though, and honestly, I do appreciate some time to reflect upon the thoughts you all share here on each topic. I want to contemplate them at length before I reply, usually.

Sometimes I find I am more Christ-centered when I’ve taken this time to reflect on what you write in response to my posts, then if I immediately rush in to make a retort. I hope you understand that my taking a few days before I get back to you doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate your interest or the time you spent in sharing with me and everyone reading.

I also wish I had more time to read every single post some of you wonderful bloggers write….. if I read every one though, I would never be a decent mother and my home would be a complete sty; I’m sure you all know what I mean.

It’s difficult to keep up in the blogging world but I’m trying, peeps, so bear with me. I love you all so much and enjoy every post I’m able to read, comment on, or simply “like.”

God bless each one of you.

Whitney & Westboro

English: Whitney Houston talking to the audien...

Image via Wikipedia

Today was a sad day for me because they buried Whitney Houston. I watched her funeral. You see, I’ve always admired her acting and singing, and was a fan of many of the songs she sang so well.

Her death has brought her into the public view to the point that I’ve now learned many things about Whitney that I didn’t know before.  I don’t think I ever realized until she died how much Whitney loved God. Whitney Houston was a very religious person.

Despite her struggles with the carnality of the world and the flesh, Whitney always believed in and loved the Lord deeply. I admire this in her greatly.

I also think it’s interesting that a superstar performer like Whitney Houston, who had it all financially, still struggled personally with so many things that regular people struggle with daily. What saddens me even more than Whitney passing, though, are the rumors I heard about the “Christian” group known as the Westboro Baptist Church. Apparently, they threatened to picket Whitney Houston’s funeral and stir up a lot of nonsense related to a parody of her song, “I will always love you.” They were attempting to change the words of the song to “God will always hate you.”

Jael Phelps picketing Trinity Episcopal Church...

Image via Wikipedia

These “Christian individuals” have no idea how much they are hurting the cause for Christ. I’m really very sad for them that they are so ignorant and deceived in their apparent self-righteousness. These truly are the vultures and vipers which Jesus railed at in His day; they are the Pharisees of the twenty-first century. Would Jesus approve of their tactics? Does God approve?   No way…not in my opinion.

God blesses the humble and the peacemakers. God doesn’t bless people who scream like wicked banshee’s in their judgmental perfection about the sins of others, to make themselves look like saints. God sees beyond this pretense directly into the heart. No one can lie about his or her own heart. God sees it all. He sees all the puffery, deceit, greed, treacherous jealousy, envy, and every dark thing within the nature of humanity.

Westboro Baptist Church at the United Nations ...

Image via Wikipedia

Followers of Jesus Christ don’t exhibit their holiness by putting down their brothers and sisters in Christ; they flaunt their insecurities and weaknesses within their relationship with Him when they behave this way. We can only pray that the Westboro bunch are able to find even a measure of the grace that Whitney had in her relationship with our Lord Jesus.

Regardless of these silly fools, I know Whitney is being held safe and close within the arms of God today. And as was said at her televised funeral, “her death and funeral brought the world to church today,” thanks to her gracious mother and family. The whole world was able to hear a wonderful message about prioritizing God in our lives while we all mourned the passing of our sister in Christ Jesus.

It was a good message shared at her funeral, an important message, and one I’m sure Whitney would want everyone to hear now that she’s with our Father in Heaven. May God bless and keep her, and help those of us who are not perfect, like her, who still struggle, who dearly love God with all of our hearts and souls. God’s grace is here for us as it was and still is for her, as is His mercy, and His ever-loving forgiveness. We are ALL “good enough,” in God’s eyes, thanks to His Son, Jesus Christ.

Absurdities in 2012 – II

A lunch sits on a blue tablecloth with a brown...

Image via Wikipedia

What is happening to our America?

Will we stand up for ourselves, one at a time, when and as these kinds of situations are occurring to us and our families?

Standing up, speaking out, and making waves is what it’s going to take to turn things around. Going meekly along like sheeple will only get us more of the same. Fight back, Americans, fight back!

This is ridiculous!

Outrage After School Tells Mom Her Child’s Lunch Is Unhealthy and Unacceptable
by America Live

A mother is outraged after school officials told her 4-year-old daughter that her home-packed lunch was not healthy enough to eat. What was so unhealthy about her lunch? Trace Gallagher reported that a lunch inspector at the school told the girl she couldn’t eat her turkey sandwich, banana, potato chips and apple juice. Instead, providing the girl with a USDA-approved lunch with the following guidelines: one serving of meat, one serving of grains, and two servings of fruit or vegetables.

When the girl returned home from school, her unopened lunch contained a note from the school saying that her lunch didn’t meet the guidelines and a $1.25 bill for the replacement lunch. The mom was outraged and anonymously wrote to the local newspaper and called a state representative. The North Carolina representative called the school which apologized, because in fact the lunch did meet all the USDA requirements.

In her statement to the newspaper, the mother argues that the issue isn’t whether the lunch meets any requirements but rather says, “Don’t tell my kid I’m not packing her lunchbox properly. I pack her lunchbox according to what she eats.”

Tell us what you think! Do schools have the right to tell parents what is or isn’t healthy enough for their children’s lunches?

The Lap of God

I learned about love from the lap of God;

discovering patience at His knee.

It’s by His hands,  I’ve been guided to Truth

His tireless Grace has made me free.

There isn’t a Valentine in the world

that can love as Christ has loved me.

No one comprehends my heart and soul,

or knows my life’s destiny.

God, I choose you to hold my heart,

today, each and every day;

You are the One who carries me close

You are the One who will stay.

Trust is hard to come by in life,

but your love, it keeps bringing me through.

No one will ever begin to come close

To this concept of love that is true.

Happy Valentines, Heavenly Father

From your loving daughter,

~ Adrienne ~

For You, Randy…

 Like this song,

my heart rose and fell in crescendo with yours;

we shared our days and nights

in deep, other-worldly conversations.

We loved, laughed, and fought…

cried, dreamed, and prayed.

Oh Randy, I miss you.

You determined, matter of fact soul.

Always wiser than I was,

and not afraid to tell me so;

our friendship is irreplaceable.

You knew it though, didn’t you?

Meet me in “the midnight blue.”

Lady Kaitlan and Lord Randal on Keeper ground,

just us two;

I want to be with you tonight.

The Prepared Christian II

I believe that the prudent, wise Christian learns the basics about survival, camping, firearms, gardening, and prepares himself or herself for disaster, economic or otherwise.
One needn’t go to extremes to simply study the basics and store enough extra food for at least a minimum of thirty days. These days, it’s foolish not to be prepared and make certain that you and your family can sustain themselves in the event of an emergency like a power outage, a natural disaster, or worse.
I’ve put together some scriputral references that show us that biblically, God considers it wise for Christians to prepare for the unexpected.
I’ve also included some interesting sites and links that will help even the most clueless get prepared a little at a time, at your own rate, with what you can afford to stock up on and buy as you’re able.
Enjoy!
Genesis 6:21

“And remember, take enough food for your family and for all the animals”.
God suggested to Noah that he prepare ahead of time.

Proverbs 6:6 – 6:11

6:6 Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and be wise! 6:7 Even though they have no prince, governor, or ruler to make them work, 6:8 they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter. 6:9 But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up? I want you to learn this lesson: 6:10 A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest 6:11 and poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.

Timothy 5:8

“But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”

Proverbs 27:12

“A prudent person foresees the danger ahead and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.”

In Talking with Mike

I received a comment from someone reading my blog named Mike. I don’t know who this person is, but his comment was rather involved and important enough that I thought I might post something in response to it. I think there may be other people reading who may feel as he does; I want to answer him and them at the same time.

Here is the comment I received:

I feel so bad for you poor people. Don’t you ever want to break the shackles and be free? Ever think “what if there are no gods or devils, and I have wasted all this time and energy?”.

Satan-jesus

Image via Wikipedia

If you were Buddhist, you would be filtering all of your life experiences to confirm your Buddhist beliefs. If you were Hindu you would be filtering all of your life experiences to confirm your Hindu beliefs. If you practiced African Bantu witchcraft you would be filtering all of your life experiences to confirm your….um…. beliefs.

What you believe, you will find proof to support that belief. That is how the human mind works.

Every religion claims that they are the only true and right one. Every religion says that their people are special or chosen. Every religion tries to keep their people isolated from “non-believers”.

You should all read about many other religions, the Koran for example, reads much like the bible. A lot of the same cast. Lots of non-believers going to hell, and only the true believers being rewarded with paradise. Their religion came after yours. You should read about some of the ones that were around before yours.

And here is my response to Mike:

I was a little surprised by your referral of myself and the rest of us Christians as “poor people.” You ask if we want to break our shackles and be free. You ask what we will do if we’ve wasted all of this time and energy and there are no gods or devils.

I care enough about what you’re asking, Mike, to clarify my feelings in-depth for you so that there can be no doubt.

I’m hardly poor; I actually consider myself to be quite rich. You cannot see my material wealth, perhaps because it is on the inside of myself and is not easily viewed, but I’m really very happy in my life and contented. I am fulfilling my destiny. I believe that destiny is to serve God according to His purposes and desires for my life and finally, after much lengthy introspection, this is what I’m doing.

Jesus is considered by scholars such as Weber ...

What you may not understand is that long ago when I chose to know and turn to God and begin a relationship with Him, my entire life really began at that point. I stepped into a great adventure. On this adventure, anything and everything has been possible and I have received the desires of my heart. I will continue to receive what I most dream of and that which will make me most happiest if I keep on the path that He wills for me to follow. There is no “waste of time” here, Mike.

If, at the end of my time on this planet, I find that there is no God, no Satan, and that everything was simply an illusion/delusion, I will not regret one moment of my choice to follow Jesus Christ, to live as God has had me to live. I won’t ever regret living my life to please God.

The way I live is good for me. The positives are incredible and are good for my body, mind, spirit, and emotional nature. The Christian lifestyle is healthy for one’s family and children too. This is a wonderful way to live!

I live a settled, stable life that brings me peace of mind, humor, inner satisfaction and happiness, a feeling of intense well-being, the knowledge that I am always protected and cared for, and I am never alone. Nothing can happen to me that God doesn’t allow to happen and God turns everything to my good, even when things may seem to the contrary.

Losing My Religion

Losing My Religion (Photo credit: Cayusa)

I have a relationship that brings me fulfillment and happiness. I feel loved and guided by my Heavenly Father. Were I to be all wrong and there is no such thing, I wouldn’t regret one minute of what I’ve experienced and lived. There would be no wasted time and energies; do you understand that I would change nothing? Nothing.

I wasn’t born into a Christian-believing family; it was the opposite, in fact. My life took many desperate turns from a very young age until I finally met God and surrendered to Him at the age of sixteen.  I strayed from the path over the next many years more times than I can tell you, but I’ve always returned like the prodigal son in the bible. The last three to four years, I’ve  been choosing the narrow path that leads to a closer  walk with Him. My love for God just keeps growing with every day that passes; I’m not poor in any way, shape, or form. I’m not in bondage or shackles, Mike.

I don’t care what the other religions do or believe because I’ve done my share of studying them over these years. I believe Jesus Christ walked the earth, was crucified, died, and rose again so that I could really live. He died so that I would have opportunity to be free from the bondage of sin and be forgiven if I will but believe on Him and repent of my wrong doings.

I’m not aware of any other religion offering me that. Through Jesus Christ, I have eternal life with God and the saints. I will experience Heaven. There will be no more pain, evil, sickness, or tears. I will live in the wondrous presence of Holy God for all eternity.

You have the same opportunities for all of this as I do if you will just reach out and take what is offered, but you can’t have the foggiest idea of what this is all about and how it feels until you do. In the interim, you’re way off from the truth of this matter and what it’s really like for me and countless of others. I hope that one day you will be blessed enough to find out for yourself how incredible this life is and how I wouldn’t change a moment of it for anything this earth could offer me. I hope one day you’ll know what I mean, Mike. May God make Himself known to you so that you’ll understand. Thank you for your comment and I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and concerns with me.
