I voted

I voted for President Barack Obama yesterday evening. My little girl was with me, as she goes to vote with me in the booth every time we vote.  She’s looking forward to when she’ll be able to cast her own vote.

I’m in a mostly Republican state, so I don’t think the president is going to win here, but I did my little part, nevertheless. I feel very good about my vote and now I’m prepared to simply trust God for what comes next. I do hope it’s going to be good news, and that the president will win another term.

I’ve been endeavoring not to participate in the dirty aspect of politics, blog-wise, so I’m probably not going to have much else to say on that topic and will likely just post other thoughts; I hope everyone is planning to vote, though. I believe we each should be good citizen’s of the nation and express our personal point of view.

It’s a good example for your children to see you voting, too.

I found something interesting too, by the way. Even though I’m a firm Independent, I had never seen this link before. I was very relieved to see it. I think it throws an entirely different perspective on things for Christians, instead of only seeing things from the right. Sometimes it’s good to take off our shades and have a look around; it can really change your heart.

Have a look!

The Intent of a Christian’s Heart

Gossip (Vanessa Amorosi song)

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. — Hebrews 4:12

When you engaged in that judgment of your neighbor the other day, and made public your thoughts about the negatives of another human being, what was the intent of your heart as a Christian believer in Jesus Christ?

Did you do this with the intent to hurt or cause harm? Is the attempt at harm covert within yourself and hard for you to recognize? Is it based upon anger within you, concern, or some other viable reason that you’re using to justify the intent?

Character assassination is an attempt to tarnish a person’s reputation. It may involve exaggeration, misleading half-truths, or manipulation of facts to present an untrue picture of the targeted person. It is a form of defamation and can be a form of ad hominem argument.

For living individuals targeted by character assassination attempts, this may result in being rejected by his community, family, or members of his or her living or work environment. Such acts are often difficult to reverse or rectify, and the process is likened to a literal assassination of a human life. The damage sustained can last a lifetime or, for historical figures, for many centuries after their death.

In practice, character assassination may involve doublespeak, spreading of rumors, innuendo or deliberate misinformation on topics relating to the subject’s morals, integrity, and reputation. It may involve spinning information that is technically true, but that is presented in a misleading manner or is presented without the necessary context. For example, it might be said that a person refused to pay any income tax during a specific year, without saying that no tax was actually owed due to the person having no income that year, or that a person was sacked from a firm, even though he may have been made redundant through no fault of his own, rather than being terminated for cause.

In politics, perhaps the most common form of character assassination is the spread of allegations that a candidate is a liar. Other common themes may include allegations that the candidate is a bad or unpopular member of his family, has a bad relationship with his spouse or children or is not respected by his colleagues. Another theme claims that the person routinely engages in disturbing, socially unacceptable behavior, such as sexual deviancy. The person may also be portrayed as holding beliefs widely considered despicable within society, such as supporting racism or other forms of bigotry.

Charging an opponent with character assassination may have political benefits. In the hearings for Clarence Thomas’ nomination to the Supreme Court of the United States, supporters claimed that both Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill were victims of character assassination.  Source

What does the bible tell us about gossip, slander, innuendo, and character assassination?

Question: “What does the Bible say about gossip?”

Answer: The Hebrew word translated “gossip” in the Old Testament is defined as “one who reveals secrets, one who goes about as a talebearer or scandal-monger.” A gossiper is a person who has privileged information about people and proceeds to reveal that information to those who have no business knowing it. Gossip is distinguished from sharing information in two ways:

1. Intent. Gossipers often have the goal of building themselves up by making others look bad and exalting themselves as some kind of repositories of knowledge.

2. The type of information shared. Gossipers speak of the faults and failings of others, or reveal potentially embarrassing or shameful details regarding the lives of others without their knowledge or approval. Even if they mean no harm, it is still gossip.

In the book of Romans, Paul reveals the sinful nature and lawlessness of mankind, stating how God poured out His wrath on those who rejected His laws. Because they had turned away from God’s instruction and guidance, He gave them over to their sinful natures. The list of sins includes gossips and slanderers (Romans 1:29b-32). We see from this passage how serious the sin of gossip is and that it characterizes those who are under God’s wrath.

Another group who were (and still are today) known for indulging in gossip is widows. Paul cautions widows against entertaining the habit of gossip and of being idle. These women are described as “gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to” (1 Timothy 5:12-13). Because women tend to spend a lot of time in each other’s homes and work closely with other women, they hear and observe situations which can become distorted, especially when repeated over and over. Paul states that widows get into the habit of going from home to home, looking for something to occupy their idleness. Idle hands are the devil’s workshop, and God cautions against allowing idleness to enter our lives. “A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man [or woman] who talks too much” (Proverbs 20:19).

Women are certainly not the only ones who have been found guilty of gossip. Anyone can engage in gossip simply by repeating something heard in confidence. The book of Proverbs has a long list of verses that cover the dangers of gossip and the potential hurt that results from it. “A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his tongue. A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret” (Proverbs 11:12-13).

The Bible tells us that “a perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends” (Proverbs 16:28). Many a friendship has been ruined over a misunderstanding that started with gossip. Those who engage in this behavior do nothing but stir up trouble and cause anger, bitterness, and pain among friends. Sadly, some people thrive on this and look for opportunities to destroy others. And when such people are confronted, they deny the allegations and answer with excuses and rationalizations. Rather than admit wrongdoing, they blame someone else or attempt to minimize the seriousness of the sin. “A fool’s mouth is his undoing, and his lips are a snare to his soul. The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s inmost parts” (Proverbs 18:7-8).

Those who guard their tongues keep themselves from calamity (Proverbs 21:23). So we must guard our tongues and refrain from the sinful act of gossip. If we surrender our natural desires to the Lord, He will help us to remain righteous. May we all follow the Bible’s teaching on gossip by keeping our mouths shut unless it is necessary and appropriate to speak.

When we attempt to assassinate someone’s character through gossip, or spreading scandalous negativity about them, we tell others who we are.  We show them our CHARACTER. As Christians, God wants our character to be without blemish, and holy as His is. He expects a lot out of us as Christians. Does our behavior reflect that of Jesus Christ?

It is the Lord’s purpose to develop character within us. “The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the heart” (Proverbs 17:3). Godly character is the result of the Holy Spirit’s work of sanctification. Character in the believer is a consistent manifestation of Jesus in his life. It is the purity of heart that God gives becoming purity in action. God sometimes uses trials to strengthen character: “we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Romans 5:3-4). The Lord is pleased when His children grow in character. “You test the heart and are pleased with integrity” (1 Chronicles 29:17; see also Psalm 15:1-2).

We can develop character by controlling our thoughts (Philippians 4:8), practicing Christian virtues (2 Peter 1:5-6), guarding our hearts (Proverbs 4:23; Matthew 15:18-20), and keeping good company (1 Corinthians 15:33). Men and women of character will set a good example for others to follow, and their godly reputation will be evident to all (Titus 2:7-8).  Source

This wonderful post by Padre Steve has renewed my hope. God often speaks through people and He did again here.

padresteve's avatarThe Inglorius Padre Steve's World

This is one of those emotional and drifting posts I do apologize that it is not one of my more witty, pithy or more well researched posts, but it is what it is.

I have become much more cognizant of the plight of the poor and suffering in the course of my adult life. Over the past few weeks and months, probably due to the nastiness of the election campaign and some of the things said about the poor and the less fortunate  have caused me to notice the poor around me as well as others that suffer in mind, body or spirit.  I have met some of the poor and even the homeless in my area. The ones that I have met all work, but don’t have enough income to pay for a place to live and live in their cars. I remember working in the projects of San…

“2016: Obama’s America”

Imagine the surprise I got when I received the following in my private email box:

CAN A MOVIE BRING DOWN A PRESIDENT?  WE THINK SO.

Dear Fellow Concerned American,

With less than a month until Election Day, we find ourselves frighteningly close to a second term for Barack Obama. An unaccountable Obama will most assuredly hammer the final nails in the American coffin he has been constructing the past four years.

As a patriotic American, you are not alone if you find yourself thinking “What can I do?” We know right-minded Republicans will cast their vote for Romney, but there are so many — too many — of our American brothers and sisters who for one reason or another remain undecided. Reaching out to and convincing undecided voters that another four years of Obama will yield disastrous results is the single most important thing “I can do.” We need to go beyond friends and family with information that will stop Obama in his tracks.

Thankfully, New York Times #1 bestselling author Dinesh D’Souza has produced the perfect tool for us to get in the hands of undecided voters at this critical time. In the box office surprise of the summer “2016,” D’Souza courageously bucks the liberal, Obama-praising talking points by pulling back the President’s Wizard of Oz curtain and revealing the man behind it — his ideology, his mentors, his colleagues, and most disturbingly, his pathological obsession with his father’s “dreams.”

Skyrocketing from initial engagements in just 100 theaters across the country to more than 1,000 theaters by September’s end, “2016” was seen by droves of conservative viewers. Now, so close to the election, we MUST get this movie on the TV screens of undecided Americans. You can help us accomplish this by pledging to donate copies of “2016” immediately upon its release on DVD.

Let “2016” speak persuasively for you and all who understand and love this country’s audaciously brave and now threatened ideals.

Please donate as many DVDs as you can right away. Click here to learn more and to donate. We must take advantage of this opportunity NOW.

With all our appreciation,

Human Events

I began to do a little research into this propagandizing documentary film out of curiosity and disgust at the email I had been sent.  The email and the film were obviously created by people who want to discredit and destroy the reputation of  President Barack Obama.  I was appalled at the seeming desperation put forth by these individuals in an attempt to ruin the president of the United States and prevent him from re-election. What I found was as follows:

null

The film’s co-producer and star, Dinesh D’Souza, just recently tendered his resignation from King’s College, a Christian college he was head of,  in Manhattan. Allegedly, D’ Souza is married and although separated, was involved with and committing adultery while attending an evangelical conference in September. D’Souza makes the claim that this isn’t the case and attempted to defend himself on FOX NEWS.  He also stated that he had “no idea that it is considered wrong in Christian circles to be engaged prior to being divorced.”  Source

Gerald Molen says the “personal challenges” of the conservative documentarian have “have nothing to do with our film.” Gerald Molen, the producer of 2016: Obama’s America, told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday that a sex scandal involving the film’s star and co-director, Dinesh D’Souza, should not be used by detractors to discredit the movie, which is a negative take on President Barack Obama.  Source

The President & Governor Romney

Picture of Jesus with American flag

Last night was debate number three.  I decided to write about it today instead of last night, as I was having a lot of trouble behaving and basically not rubbing President Obama’s victory into the faces of some who appear to dislike and even hate President Obama.  They don’t hesitate to make their own negative thoughts of the president loud and clear to everyone, so it’s so hard not to do the same. Of course, this isn’t the least bit Christian of them or me and after I found that scripture that I placed onto the top of this post, entitled “Our Cherished Vote,” I decided that I better start attempting to act like a follower of Jesus Christ even when it comes to supporting my presidential candidate.

I’ve read a lot of blogs and facebooks lately, and many people who love the Lord don’t hesitate to slander, condemn, judge, and quite literally accuse President Obama of countless awful, ugly things. There is gloating and tangible hate for the president from people that profess a love of our Father who art in Heaven. I just don’t understand this. As much as I dislike and don’t trust Governor Mitt Romney, and believe that he is not at all what or who he appears to be, I don’t wish him harm or hate him. I just don’t want him to be the president of this country that I love with all of my heart. I don’t think he’s going to be good for anybody but his rich cronies;  I highly doubt he’ll be good for America.

Just say no to Mormonism

I have a lot of judgment I can offer in respect to this man, believe me, if I wanted to really get into what I think about him.  As Christians, I cannot comprehend followers of Jesus Christ voting for someone that claims belief in something that completely rejects Jesus Christ as Lord and savior, that claims Mary wasn’t a virgin, that believes in other gods and things that I know God doesn’t approve of, based upon what the bible says; nevertheless, I know we’re all entitled to listen to God’s voice within our hearts and make our minds up, so I’m trying not to be too over the top with my campaigning for Obama on my blog or elsewhere.  I’m trying to be respectful of other people’s points of view.

I do have to say, though, that last night Governor Romney was very rude to Candy Crowley and to President Obama; in fact, he appeared to be mocking our president, and thus I lost even more respect for him as the night went on. I did pray for him and the president, however, before the debate even started. My daughter and I both hit our knees and asked for God’s blessing on the two men. This political season has been very tricky for me as a follower of Jesus Christ, who is trying to follow the bible and the words of Jesus Christ in daily living. My conscience keeps me on the straight and narrow most of the time, but it’s easy to slip up and act in an inappropriate way sometimes.  By “inappropriate” I mean acting in a way that Jesus Christ wouldn’t approve of, a way that HE would not act.

Jesus is considered by scholars such as Weber ...

I want Him to be proud of me in all I do, my speech, actions, thoughts, and all of my behavior.  I’m committed to being a Christian for the duration of my life and after death, so I want to get it right because of a very deep love and loyalty I have for God.  It’s just so hard… and I know it’s hard for everybody, including my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. This election has been a real distraction and I’ll be glad when it’s over and I can get back to my normal life and focus on the routine things I normally deal with. I’ve been very nervous about this election, and I simply need to relax and just trust God about it all.

Senator Barack Obama speaks to a crowd of supp...

Anyway, I thought a lot of President Obama last night. I was filled with pride at how strong he was, and how brave. I know that he is a non-confrontational kind of person, so it was hard for him to stand up to Governor Romney and behave in an aggressive manner. He was passionate and polite, though, and calm, cool, and collected the majority of the debate, (despite getting tough on Romney). I do hope he wins this election very, very much, but I’m trusting God that all will go according to His will, not mine. God has His reasons for everything that happens in this life and He will bring good out of the worst of things for those who believe and love Him. If we wind up with Governor Romney as our president, I will try my best to pray for him and hope the best for his presidency, but it won’t be easy.

No Man Can Serve Two Masters

“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

— Matthew 6:24

Mammon – Mammon is a Syriac word, a name given to an idol worshiped as the god of riches. It has the same meaning as Plutus among the Greeks. It is not known that the Jews ever formally worshiped this idol, but they used the word to denote wealth. The meaning is, ye cannot serve the true God, and at the same time be supremely engaged in obtaining the riches of this world. One must interfere with the other. See Luke 16:9-11.

Whereas it is not an Hebrew word, nor an adjective, but a substantive, and signifies riches; which are opposed to God, being by some men loved, admired, trusted in, and worshiped, as if they were God; and which is incompatible with the service of the true God: for such persons, whose hearts go after their covetousness, and are set upon earthly riches, who give up themselves to them, are eagerly and anxiously pursuing after them, and place their confidence in them; whatever pretensions they may make to the service of God, as did the Scribes and Pharisees, who are particularly struck at by this expression, both here and elsewhere, they cannot truly and heartily serve the Lord.

“Mammon” is the god they serve; which word may well be thought to answer to Pluto, the god of riches, among the Heathens. The Jews, in Christ’s time, were notorious for the love of “mammon”; and they themselves own, that this was the cause of the destruction of the second temple: the character they give of those, who lived under the second temple, is this:

“we know that they laboured in the law, and took care of the commandments, and of the tithes, and that their whole conversation was good; only that they , “loved the mammon”, and hated one another without a cause (b).”

Our Cherished Vote

Seven Deadly Sins by Rox Steady

“Do not rejoice when your enemies fall, and do not let your heart be glad when they stumble.” –Proverbs 24:17

When making up our minds on whom we will cast our vote for this election season, I think it’s important to remember that one sin is not necessarily better or worse than another.  Sin is sin. Our choice of who to vote for within the two major parties are choices between infallible human beings who all sin, who are obviously not choosing to completely follow the bible in their daily lives.

For example, here are a just a few of the sins we’ll be supporting when we vote Republican:

  1. Making an idol out of money/making money our god
  2. Support of the industrial war machine for profit due to GREED.
  3. Murder/killing of innocents through unnecessary war
  4. Favoring of the rich over the poor
  5. A complete lack of concern for the sick, disabled, elderly, poor, an indigent
  6. The murder/killing of human beings through capital punishment when we claim to be pro-life
  7. Pharisee-like HYPOCRISY and pretense at being holier than thou & moral
  8. No great love for one’s fellow man as Christ demanded,  & little compassion
  9. The ravaging and destruction of planet Earth for profit & GREED.
  10. The destruction of wild life/animal life for profit & GREED.
  11. Corruption, lies, misleading hyperbole
  12. Pride and materialism to the extreme

Here are some more sins we’ll get behind when we vote Democrat:

  1. Abortion
  2. Favoring homosexual marriage
  3. Rebellion by some toward God of the bible, in particular
  4. Sexual immorality
  5. Corruption, lies, misleading hyperbole
  6. Waffling around over support of Israel

Now, I’m sure that I’ve missed some and that there are many more that are not included because we could go on and on ad infinitum.  Unfortunately, I see many sins, serious sins on the backs of both parties, not just the Democratic party as it relates to abortion and gay marriage. I see genocide of the very planet itself and an incessant desire to engage in war via the Republican party.

We’ll never know how many millions have perished due to Republican blood lust and greed for money. I see the right making an idol out of the dollar and celebrating the death penalty; thus I’m fairly certain that the attempt at comparing the sin on both sides of the aisle is not going to amount to the right being the party a Christian should be advised to vote for, as opposed to the left.

Both of these parties are sinful and do not represent our Lord. No one can argue to the contrary.

God's Politics, by Jim Wallis

God’s Politics, by Jim Wallis (Photo credit: elycefeliz)

This election cycle, we must each vote according to how God wills us to vote; He will make Himself clear, imo, but I don’t feel that there is a more right, assumed stance that we should take as Christians. Our vote is indeed a very personal matter and it should be respected as such, in my opinion.

It’s difficult to watch ourselves and our behavior when we get behind one candidate or another, but we need to remember that all of these people fall short and are sinners, just as we are. We should probably be praying for those who are planning to attempt to try to lead us and hoping for the best for all of them. Even if we don’t like them or approve of them, as Christians we will have to follow these leaders under the law,  if and when they are eventually elected into office.

My primary point is this, said by a wonderful writer here:

“We are Christians. All those other labels—Democrat, Republican, liberal, conservative—are secondary to being Christian, our passionate quests to enact grace and live a Christian way of life. As I reflect on my missing sentence, I realize that it sounds a wee bit like a sentence from scripture. Not one printed in RED letters, but the plain black words of St. Paul: “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male or female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” If the blessed apostle were around for press conferences today, I’m pretty sure he’d add, “no longer Republican or Democrat,” too.” Source.

“God is, as scripture tells us, the author of all goodness. God never rejoices in sin, and we know that sin is not the exclusive possession of any political party. The darkness that stalks us is neither Republican nor Democratic. It is part of the human condition, that which makes us all cry out for compassion—and that compassion is an apt starting point for a Christian politics of grace, not partisan vindictiveness.” Source

Double Standard

pot calling a kettle black

I’m admittedly a little confused.

Tonight I watched Vice President Joe Biden eat Congressman Paul Ryan for supper and laugh him back out, and yet this was lauded as “rude, impolite, disrespectful, interrupting, ”  etc., yet no one had a problem with it when Romney did the exact same thing to President Obama and the moderator last week.

Double standard much?

Everyone declared Romney the winner because of his overly-aggressive, demanding, bullying “style.”  Even Democrats approved of the disrespect perpetrated onto a more passive, quiet President Obama, (who, btw, isn’t likely to behave much differently next time around because he’s just classy and passive like that), yet when we turn the tables and unleash the Democratic junkyard dog, VP Joe Biden onto a young Paul Ryan, suddenly Joe is now in the wrong and seen as uncouth?  How utterly ridiculous.

Joe Biden clearly won the debate and did exactly what he needed to do to clarify the many untruths and spin that have been flowing all over the various cable channels since the first debate. I appreciated the clarification very much and I have no doubt so did most of the American people.  What I don’t appreciate, however,  is the extremely obvious bias, whining, and sour grapes put forth by some when the exact same tactics are used in the second debate as were used in the first. What’s good for the goose, people!

Apostle Peter & the Last Supper

Bill-Oberst-Jr-Robert-Loggia

Last night I got to watch a brand new movie called “Apostle Peter and the Last Supper.” It’s a 2012 showing and is just magnificent. It was available on Dishnet On Demand, but I’m sure you can rent it as well.

This movie offers you the perspective of Peter as he sits in jail, three days away from execution. It shows you the absolute grace within a follower of Jesus Christ, who is in love with his Lord above all else. It is indeed a thing of beauty. Seeing his faith in action is inspirational.

This movie is pure and powerful. You are able to put yourself into Peter’s place and imagine how you might react under similar circumstances. To Peter, the most important thing that mattered most, even in the stress and discomfort of a jail cell, was talking to his jailers about Jesus. He was so wise!

What was also amazing, was that these jailers wanted to know about Jesus; they were actually curious, so Peter wasn’t tossing his pearls before swine. These men knew Peter had something important to say. He actually met and walked with Jesus! He had no problem giving up his life because he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt where he was headed when his breath left his body.

To have lived in those times must have been quite something. To have actually known Jesus! Can you imagine it? I can only hope I would have such grace under pressure.

Be sure and see this movie. You won’t ever forget it.

2012 Presidential Debate

The first presidential debate is over and the media are in a feeding frenzy as they attempt to call who officially won the debate. Based upon my channel surfing, it appears that even some Democrats are saying Romney was clearly the winner;  I, the measly Independent voter, however, did not see it that way at all.

The president seemed calm, but maybe a little weary, and well he should be; after all, he is the sitting president, and he’s got a lot on his plate. He didn’t hesitate to correct Romney or go after him, but was exceedingly polite as he did so. He was hardly a lap dog sitting back and drifting off to sleep while Romney forged ahead. I found the president to be engaged, on top of his game, and firmly in control of what was said and how he responded to it. He never allowed himself to take any cheap shots. I thought he was real mellow, but extremely informed in his calm, laid back manner.

Romney, on the other hand, seemed intense, anxious, and had this nervous, worried look on his face the entire debate. He looked like he’ll be wrung out to dry for weeks after that…aka stressed to the max. Here is the primary difference, for me, between the two candidates. I trust President Obama with the country’s well being more than I trust Governor Romney. I come away from this first debate continuing to trust the president; that’s the only thing that has changed for me thus far.

Romney corrected the president numerous times as well, but I still come away feeling that I’m not hearing the whole story from Romney. Going in, I was very concerned about Romney taking the scissors to the various entitlements and what this would do to the poor and middle class. He discussed doing that very thing, in an almost-giddy, too-intense way when he cracked that he would cut PBS, despite liking big bird, and apologized to Jim L., (the moderator). Jim’s face looked kind of pinched though, as if he didn’t find the joke to be amusing at all; I can see why. None of this is at all funny.

Both of these men are probably actually good, decent men. I hope that neither one will do this country great harm. Of the two, however, I’m personally most comfortable with President Obama at the helm versus Governor Romney. I don’t know why but Governor Romney makes me nervous. I see more humanity within President Obama, more compassion, more empathy, and more authenticity. In my opinion, Governor Romney had a decent night tonight, but he didn’t win this debate. I thought it was a tie if there actually has to be a winner.
