Reminder

Woman screaming at traffic pic

“A man was being tailgated by a stressed out woman on a busy street. Suddenly, the light turned yellow just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk. The tailgating woman hit the roof, and the horn, screaming as she missed her chance to get through the intersection.

As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a police officer. He took her to the police station where she placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, the policeman opened the cell door and said, “I’m very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the ‘What Would Jesus Do?’ bumper sticker, the ‘Follow Me to Sunday School’ bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk. Naturally, I assumed you had stolen the car!”

As Believers, we are always being watched.”

Far From Home

Heaven

“Far From Home”

Another day in this carnival of souls
Another night settles in as quickly as it goes
The memories of shadows, ink on the page
And I can’t seem to find my way home
And it’s almost like
Your heaven’s trying everything
Your heaven’s trying everything
To keep me out

All the places I’ve been and things I’ve seen
A million stories that made up a million shattered dreams
The faces of people I’ll never see again
And I can’t seem to find my way home

Cause it’s almost like
Your heaven’s trying everything to break me down
Cause it’s almost like
Your heaven’s trying everything to keep me out

[Guitar Solo]

Cause it’s almost like
Your heaven’s trying everything to break me down
Cause it’s almost like

Your heaven’s trying everything
Your heaven’s trying everything to break me down
To break me down
To break me down

Your heaven’s trying everything
Your heaven’s trying everything to break me down

My take on this song:

It is when we are broken down that our hearts become humbled and completely open to God above. Pride, rebellion, earthly knowledge, ego…all of these can prevent a connection with the Most High.

When we are at our most humble, when desperate and seeking Him with a whole heart, He will be found. Once we make contact, we realize He was always there the entire time. He was simply waiting on us to come to Him.

God is not that far from anyone. And we are never that far from home. Reach out. Cry out His name with a sincere, believing heart. He promises that He will be found. There is no need to experience the hopeless feelings expressed within this fine song when it comes to God or Heaven above.

Bostonian Bombings

Boston

Boston (Photo credit: Bahman Farzad)

I just wanted to mention that I’m sad to hear about the people injured and killed, especially the child of eight who lost his young life due to these horrific bombings. I wish we didn’t live in a world like this where these kinds of things happen. May God be with the victims of this senseless violence and their friends and families. You are all in my prayers.

——————–

Statement by the President

James S. Brady Press Briefing Room

Good afternoon, everybody. Earlier today, I was briefed by my homeland security team on the events in Boston. We’re continuing to monitor and respond to the situation as it unfolds. And I’ve directed the full resources of the federal government to help state and local authorities protect our people, increase security around the United States as necessary, and investigate what happened.

The American people will say a prayer for Boston tonight. And Michelle and I send our deepest thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims in the wake of this senseless loss.

We don’t yet have all the answers. But we do know that multiple people have been wounded, some gravely, in explosions at the Boston Marathon.

I’ve spoken to FBI Director Mueller and Secretary of Homeland Security Napolitano, and they’re mobilizing the appropriate resources to investigate and to respond.

I’ve updated leaders of Congress in both parties, and we reaffirmed that on days like this there are no Republicans or Democrats — we are Americans, united in concern for our fellow citizens.

I’ve also spoken with Governor Patrick and Mayor Menino, and made it clear that they have every single federal resource necessary to care for the victims and counsel the families. And above all, I made clear to them that all Americans stand with the people of Boston.

Boston police, firefighters, and first responders as well as the National Guard responded heroically, and continue to do so as we speak. It’s a reminder that so many Americans serve and sacrifice on our behalf every single day, without regard to their own safety, in dangerous and difficult circumstances. And we salute all those who assisted in responding so quickly and professionally to this tragedy.

We still do not know who did this or why. And people shouldn’t jump to conclusions before we have all the facts. But make no mistake — we will get to the bottom of this. And we will find out who did this; we’ll find out why they did this. Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice.

Today is a holiday in Massachusetts — Patriots’ Day. It’s a day that celebrates the free and fiercely independent spirit that this great American city of Boston has reflected from the earliest days of our nation. And it’s a day that draws the world to Boston’s streets in a spirit of friendly competition. Boston is a tough and resilient town. So are its people. I’m supremely confident that Bostonians will pull together, take care of each other, and move forward as one proud city. And as they do, the American people will be with them every single step of the way.

You should anticipate that as we get more information, our teams will provide you briefings. We’re still in the investigation stage at this point. But I just want to reiterate we will find out who did this and we will hold them accountable.

Thank you very much.

Uncle Donald

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. — Romans 8:28

I’ve been away and haven’t been able to blog at all. A lot of things have happened the last week or so and most of them were entirely unexpected. A close family friend of ours, whom I’ve known for the last twenty years and have considered a best friend, fell ill. He’s an older man and I adopted him into our family a long time ago. My daughter has grown up calling him “Uncle Don” and loves him dearly, as do I. As Don has aged over the years, he’s fallen prey to typical things many elderly people encounter and is now apparently suffering symptomatology consistent with congestive heart failure.

Uncle Don had to go to the Emergency Room a week or so ago and is a United States Veteran. He’s a military man through and through. They have wonderful services here for retired military when health problems arise, thankfully, but various things occurred that led to a very dramatic week that has been just exhausting for all of us.

Finally Uncle Don has landed where he should have been years ago, had I had anything to say about it. Don is now staying with us and has become our tenant in some private quarters here on the property. I guess you could say we’re now going to be his “assisted living facility” and I’m the new “head nurse.”  Anyway, my teen daughter is blissful about it as she never gets to see enough of Uncle Don, and as he’s my best friend, I’m just as thrilled. I wish the circumstances were different, but I’m so glad to have his company here.

I was very worried about Don several days ago, but now it seems that God has brought unexpected good out of all of this and we’re a family again, living at the same address. I’m so thankful that everything has turned out in this manner, though I honestly wish Don was in better health; still, he’s with us and we love him very much and our property is the happier with him residing upon it. I had no idea how much that bible verse above can mean until I journey along and experience various events that seem terrible, but are remarkably turned out for the good of all of us in this home who love the Lord, including Don.

I’ve been terribly busy helping Uncle Don and my daughter’s been ill with a spring cold, so I’ve had my hands full and there was absolutely no time to blog. I just wanted to catch everybody up and tell you guys how much I missed sharing my thoughts on this blog with all of you. Things seem so different now at my home with Don here, and I am blessed immensely.

Rain!

Rain

Rain (Photo credit: Moyan_Brenn)

Dear God,

Thank you so much for the rain! We were about to go into Stage Three water restrictions and it’s only April. We got a huge storm and lots of rain and it’s still raining off and on today. The internet is spotty because we’re in the country, out of the city limits. The pets do not care for the rain and are very tentative about going outside. The floors are a bit muddy, but I don’t care. I love rainy days and the way all of nature reacts after it gets a bath.

We love you, Lord!

Easter Weekend

Window at Parish Church of St Peter, Frampton ...

At our place, it’s pretty quiet as we ready ourselves for Easter Sunday at a relatively new church that we discovered on Christmas Eve. We attended the Christmas Eve service there and loved it, so we’re looking forward to attending the Easter Sunday service and if we like it, we’ll be attending there regularly in the future.

I’m escorting teenagers, including my own, to the Sunday service, and then we’re going out to lunch afterwards to discuss the service. These teens will all be coming over to our place after that to hang out for awhile. So my Easter Sunday will be spent doing what I always seem to end up doing… spending time with youth. This is probably a good thing as I’m youthful in mind and heart and always have been, no matter my earthly years. I seem to relate well to kids. Anyway, we’re cleaning the house and trying to find our Easter dresses.

Last night we stayed up until midnight watching a really great movie called “Jesus,” which was about four hours long. My daughter just loved it and every time I can get her to watch something like this, she seems to come away with more clarity about the death of Jesus Christ, and the Resurrection. Again, this is a good thing. I want her to be able to empathize with and understand the meaning of these two events as they relate to her specifically, and to all of us.

Tonight, I expect we’ll try and get to bed early because we have to be up really early. I think we’ll try and watch another show about the Resurrection, but it depends on what’s going on and how successful we are with getting ready for bed at a reasonable hour.

I hope everyone else here at WordPress is planning a wonderful holiday with friends and family, and may God bless and keep each one of you, and bring you new intimacy with Him and Jesus Christ our Lord.

Have a blessed Easter.  (hugs to all of you)

The Servant

Pasen

“Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world!” (John 1:29, 36)

“Who believes what we’ve heard and seen?
Who would have thought God’s saving power would look like this?

The servant grew up before God—a scrawny seedling, a scrubby plant in a parched field. There was nothing attractive about him, nothing to cause us to take a second look. He was looked down on and passed over, a man who suffered, who knew pain firsthand. One look at him and people turned away.
We looked down on him, thought he was scum. But the fact is, it was our pains he carried—our disfigurements, all the things wrong with us.

We thought he brought it on himself, that God was punishing him for his own failures. But it was our sins that did that to him, that ripped and tore and crushed him—our sins! He took the punishment, and that made us whole.
Through his bruises we get healed. We’re all like sheep who’ve wandered off and gotten lost. We’ve all done our own thing, gone our own way. And God has piled all our sins, everything we’ve done wrong, on him, on him.

He was beaten, he was tortured, but he didn’t say a word. Like a lamb taken to be slaughtered and like a sheep being sheared, he took it all in silence. Justice miscarried, and he was led off—and did anyone really know what was happening? He died without a thought for his own welfare, beaten bloody for the sins of my people. They buried him with the wicked, threw him in a grave with a rich man, Even though he’d never hurt a soul or said one word that wasn’t true.

Still, it’s what God had in mind all along, to crush him with pain. The plan was that he give himself as an offering for sin so that he’d see life come from it—life, life, and more life. And God’s plan will deeply prosper through him. Out of that terrible travail of soul, he’ll see that it’s worth it and be glad he did it.

Through what he experienced, my righteous one, my servant, will make many “righteous ones,” as he himself carries the burden of their sins. Therefore I’ll reward him extravagantly—the best of everything, the highest honors—
Because he looked death in the face and didn’t flinch, because he embraced the company of the lowest. He took on his own shoulders the sin of the many,  he took up the cause of all the black sheep.” (Isaiah 53 — the message)

God

Sometimes I just cringe when I read commentary and postings from various conservative Christians about God. To read their blogs, and listen to their interpretations of the Old and New Testament, there is the image of a vicious, brutal dictator as God. He is holy and dangerous to aggravate.  And love? I see no sign of a loving god in what they write, in their descriptions of Him.

This isn’t the god I know! This isn’t the god I love.

How can we all be so wrong? Someone has made a terrible mistake. Is it me? Or are they completely backward and deluded in what they believe? All I have to go on is my relationship with God, my prayer life, the feelings I have about Him when I feel that I’m in His presence and the daily “being” with Him and the feelings that this evokes.

Storm from an Angry God

Storm from an Angry God (Photo credit: vladdythephotogeek)

In my personal experience, God is not the harsh & hateful creature that they make Him out to be. I hate what they write and how they portray my Father who art in Heaven. He is not the angry, legalistic, old monster they make Him sound like. Now I’m not saying that He’s not stern at times or even strict — but He’s loving and knows me better than I know myself. He makes allowances for my weaknesses, for my HUMAN-NESS.

I’m not sure I could love a god who scared the dickens out of me, who seemed more evil than loving, whom I could not even trust. A god who was out to get me, who was secretly watching for every moment I sinned or screwed up, would be a horrific beast that I would want to hide from. I wouldn’t worship a god like that; that’s an abusive alien monster.

I wish we Christians could all get together on exactly who God is in our various interpretations and descriptions; it makes for a very confusing testimony when we’re all envisioning something completely different — what’s up with that? Is the bible really that confusing that we’re getting such different images of God?

Edit:

I edited this post after the fact because it was offensive to a fellow Christian sister in my use of a descriptive adjective “bastard” to try and describe God from the point of view of those who view Him in punitive, angry fashion.  I didn’t mean to offend anyone by the use of this word and apologize if I did so.
