God’s Plan & Racism

In a FOX NEWS interview with Sean Hannity, George Zimmerman told Hannity that Trayvon Martin’s death was God’s will. He also stated that he wouldn’t do anything differently that night, had he an opportunity to change the way that things happened.

The Martin family was obviously very troubled by these comments, as am I.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything so ignorant in all of my life.

There are Christians who actually claim that horrific events are “God’s will.” This is pure ignorance and I’m not sure how a Christian can come to these kinds of conclusions. It would seem to me that incidents like this are the unfortunate will of people and their poor judgment, not God’s.

Even “natural” catastrophes that have to do with the weather can hardly be attributed to God. Cancer and other horrible illness isn’t God’s will. What we have done and continue to do to this planet and the living beings upon this earth is the will of the people on this planet because of the sin of GREED.

The way greedy men and women treat this planet and the animals on this earth is not God’s choice for how this earth is to handled. People have made Mammon their idol; they are no longer worshiping God or doing His will.

God put Christians and the rest of us here to be good “stewards of the earth” and the animals upon it. He trusted us to treat both with good will, conscience, and humanity.

Gods ultim will become like Jesus cover

God trusts us in the same way to treat our neighbors as we do ourselves.

Blowing our neighbors away with concealed handguns is not the will of God. Murdering unarmed minor children is not God’s will. Stating that one would change nothing about a violent situation because God wanted things to come out that way is insanity.

God is also not a racist and He doesn’t biblically approve of racism.  Pretending that one is not racist and that we don’t have a problem with racism as a nation is just plain silly and dishonest. Racially profiling others is a problem — it’s a problem that many of us have, whether we want to admit to it or not.  We can’t change anything until we get honest about it.

Question: “What does the Bible say about racism, prejudice, and discrimination?”

Answer: The first thing to understand in this discussion is that there is only one race—the human race. Caucasians, Africans, Asians, Indians, Arabs, and Jews are not different races. Rather, they are different ethnicities of the human race. All human beings have the same physical characteristics (with minor variations, of course). More importantly, all human beings are created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-27). God loved the world so much that He sent Jesus to lay down His life for us (John 3:16). The “world” obviously includes all ethnic groups.

God does not show partiality or favoritism (Deuteronomy 10:17; Acts 10:34; Romans 2:11; Ephesians 6:9), and neither should we. James 2:4 describes those who discriminate as “judges with evil thoughts.” Instead, we are to love our neighbors as ourselves (James 2:8). In the Old Testament, God divided humanity into two “racial” groups: Jews and Gentiles. God’s intent was for the Jews to be a kingdom of priests, ministering to the Gentile nations. Instead, for the most part, the Jews became proud of their status and despised the Gentiles. Jesus Christ put an end to this, destroying the dividing wall of hostility (Ephesians 2:14). All forms of racism, prejudice, and discrimination are affronts to the work of Christ on the cross.

Jesus commands us to love one another as He loves us (John 13:34). If God is impartial and loves us with impartiality, then we need to love others with that same high standard. Jesus teaches in Matthew 25 that whatever we do to the least of His brothers, we do to Him. If we treat a person with contempt, we are mistreating a person created in God’s image; we are hurting somebody whom God loves and for whom Jesus died.

Racism, in varying forms and to various degrees, has been a plague on humanity for thousands of years. Brothers and sisters of all ethnicities, this should not be. Victims of racism, prejudice, and discrimination need to forgive. Ephesians 4:32 declares, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Racists may not deserve your forgiveness, but we deserved God’s forgiveness far less. Those who practice racism, prejudice, and discrimination need to repent. “Present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God” (Romans 6:13). May Galatians 3:28 be completely realized, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

If I Laugh

The Very Best of Cat Stevens

The Very Best of Cat Stevens (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

If I laugh

‘Cause if I laugh just a little bit
Maybe I can forget the chance
That I didn’t have to know you
And live in peace, in peace

‘Cause if I laugh just a little bit
Maybe I can forget the plans that
I didn’t use to get you
At home, with me, alone

Oh yeah

‘Cause if I laugh just a little bit
Maybe I can recall the way
That I used to be, before you
And sleep at night, and dream
‘Cause if I laugh, baby if I laugh
Just a little bit
Oh yeah

“If I laugh,” Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam

Lord..?

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” Matthew 25: 31-46

Live By the Sword, Die By the Sword

Trayvon Martin Protest - Sanford

In Mississippi, apparently there has already been violence connected to the Zimmerman/Martin verdict. Three black men allegedly kidnap a white jogger and beat him “for Trayvon Martin,” releasing him on a country road. (Source)

Obviously this is aberrant, horrific behavior, but in a society that tells us it’s legal and acceptable to murder an innocent, unarmed seventeen year old child, I’m not at all surprised. Zimmerman, the “neighborhood watchman” carried a concealed weapon,  yet didn’t even identify himself or his position to the child he followed and eventually confronted. The innocent boy reacts, scared half to death, and gets murdered for defending himself! That child was standing his own ground.

Well, the jury is wrong in their verdict. It is most definitely wrong.

When we tell Americans that it’s okay to murder other human beings in alleged self defense with concealed carry handguns, will we be surprised when violence becomes the rule of law in this nation? When we choose to live by the sword and teach our kids to live by the sword in this manner, prepare to also die by the sword, Americans.

Jesus told us that this would be the end result of that kind of a choice, so be careful what you wish for; you just might get it.

Live by the sword, die by the sword” is a saying derived from a biblical parable to the effect that if you use violence, or other harsh means, against other people, you can expect to have those same means used against you; “You can expect to become a victim of whatever means you use to get what you want.”[1]

The proverb comes from the Gospel of Matthew, verse 26:52, which describes a disciple (identified in the Gospel of John as Simon Peter) drawing a sword to defend against the arrest of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, but is rebuked by Jesus, who tells him to sheath the weapon:

Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.” (Matthew 26:52, King James Version)

“The verse can be interpreted as an instruction for Christian pacifism.” (Source).

American Christians, we are heading in a dangerous direction! We need to turn back now and do our part to make this murder of Trayvon Martin right. According to the bible, our turn is coming as well! I think we’re seeing only the beginning of this can of worms if something isn’t altered within our laws and criminal justice system. We are preparing to return to the days of the old West and the brutal deaths that went along with those days.

“When policemen break the law then there isn’t any law, just a fight for survival.” Billy Jack

We may quite possibly be entering an era where the majority of American citizenry is armed with concealed weapons and everyone has their story of why murdering the next guy is acceptable because it’s self defense. Think of the road rage incidents that are already out of control.

We need to turn back, calm down, and think this through, fellow citizens. Whether you believe in God or not, the bible is telling us the truth. You pick up that gun and consider using it, and you may die by a similar gun when you encounter someone just as determined to protect him or her self. Think about it.

If you choose this course for the nation and back up conservative lawmakers and those within the criminal justice system who support this insanity, you are responsible for what you chose. You are complicit in this decision and choice. I’ve had several Conservative Christian Americans tell me that if I vote for a president who supports abortion, then I support abortion. Well, this is the same thing. Remember the words of Jesus and make sure you are prepared to die by the sword.

Jesus Wore A Hoodie

It’s difficult to know what to write about the death of Trayvon Martin. Instead of casting stones and blame about, or poisoning my heart and the hearts of others with the burdens of what is wrong with our justice system,  today I choose to try to remember Trayvon with hope and love. I will not think about the nations problems with prejudice, even in these days with all we’ve learned. Today I will remember and honor the memory of a young seventeen year old boy, who was taken from this world far too soon. Trayvon, a week before his death

Today, I picture Trayvon resting in the arms of Jesus, where he is safe, beloved, treasured, and most of all not betrayed. A safer place for Trayvon will not be found, though the arms of his mother, father, and family members were probably pretty close. I’m asking the Lord to also hold Sybrina Fulton, Tray’s mom, and Tracy Martin, Tray’s Dad, and the rest of the Martin family and friends within God’s arms as well, close to His heart.  May they rest in the presence of our Lord, knowing we grieve with them for Trayvon Martin, a life cut short before he had barely lived.

May we all learn what God wants us to learn about this sad, tragic, unthinkable blot upon our nation’s history. May we overcome as a people what brought us to the place where an innocent child is lost to us, through no fault of his own. May God bless and keep young Trayvon Martin and may we never forget why or how he lost his precious life.

Martin’s family members weren’t in the courtroom when the verdict was read, but reacted on Twitter Saturday night. Tracy Martin, Trayvon’s father, expressed his disappointment with the verdict, tweeting, ”Even though I am broken hearted my faith is unshattered I WILL ALWAYS LOVE MY BABY TRAY.” Trayvon’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, tweeted ”Lord during my darkest hour I lean on you. You are all that I have. At the end of the day, GOD is still in control. Thank you all for your prayers and support. I will love you forever Trayvon!!! In the name of Jesus!!!”

Unconditional Love Brings Death

Absolutely love this posting by Rebecca Trotter. She has obviously heard God’s voice within her spirit and is teaching His word. The challenge is whether or not God’s people will hear it. Thanks for the insight and truth, Rebecca!

Rebecca Trotter's avatarThe Upside Down World

Unconditional-LoveI’ve come across a number of Christians lately who are questioning the impulse to elevate love above any other concern. Love is too soft and squishy, they say. Love becomes an excuse to avoid hard things like confronting sin and enforcing discipline. One writer even asked if we are in danger of making love an idol. (Perhaps he hasn’t gotten to the part where the bible says that God IS love?!?)

I have something to tell you about people who say that love is squishy, soft, a cop-out: quite clearly, such a person has never actually attempted to love unconditionally. Loving unconditionally is the hardest thing any human being can ever try to do. Confronting sin? Upsetting friends and family? Setting boundaries and rules? Pffftttt . . . . Those are the simplest, most natural things in the world for the fallen human mind to do. Loving unconditionally? That WILL…

Praise Him Through Even BPD

Praise the LordI’ve had a lot of worries lately. Most of them have concerned my teen child, who is the most important person in my life, after God of course.

My daughter is trying some new medications. She has officially been diagnosed with Bipolar Personality Disorder. This disorder has seriously impacted her life. I haven’t spoken about this on my blog until now. This is something very private that I wanted to keep to myself. I wasn’t going to expose how difficult dealing with disorder has been for me as a Mom. I have suffered in silence, so to speak.

This personality disorder is pure hell. The stress is puts upon the families of the child with BPD is something that will vary, child to child. The challenges of this disease are immense and demanding. Parenting a child with this problem is a whole new ballgame. As a Christian, this is yet another obstacle that my daughter and I will deal with, and deal with happily, with faith in God.

I trust God to get me through this and help me navigate the hills and valleys. I trust God to help my daughter through her medications, therapy, and the new doctor overseeing her care. I thank God and praise Him even in these awful trials that challenge she and I, and I ask for His blessing upon my beautiful little girl, and His protection in the name of His son, Jesus Christ my Lord.

Our Family’s Fourth of July

I’ve been really busy with many things but thankfully it’s a holiday. Time to celebrate America’s Independence and wish all of you a very happy Fourth of July with your friends and family.

Here at our place, we’re going to be sipping fresh-squeezed strawberry lemonade with freshly minced strawberries, one of my teen daughter’s favorites. We’ve also got a little cook out planned with Uncle Donald. NewYork Strip steaks are on the menu, along with salad, green chili macaroni and cheese, with fresh guacamole dip and chips for an appetizer.

Later after our barbecue, we’re going to be watching some pay per view movies that we’ve wanted to see for awhile. They are all new releases and one of them is a really good science fiction called “Dark Skies.” Can’t wait to see it.

Around nine pm we usually watch the fireworks; we can catch them at one of the neighboring air force bases close to where we live, but we’re out of the city limits, so our neighbors often make sure we have plenty to watch right here in our front yard.

I’m really looking forward to getting my mind off of some of the more serious concerns that have kept me preoccupied of late. There have been some not-so-enjoyable challenges on the home front that I’ve taken to the good Lord in prayer; sometimes that’s all I can do because I have little to no control over certain situations.

Anyway, I’ve not really felt like writing too much about my various concerns. I guess this has been a little obvious, huh? Hopefully, I’ll be able to get back into the swing of things and enjoy blogging a bit more in the upcoming days. Summer time can be difficult to get motivated to write regularly because I’m spending most of my time with my daughter and putting her first in my life. She’s out of school and we stay busy keeping each other amused.

God bless you all and keep you this fourth of July. I hope you get to spend time doing what you love most, with those whom you love most.
