Extorting the President

United States Capitol

United States Capitol (Photo credit: Jack in DC)

As we wait for yet another potential government shutdown, it’s interesting to think about a rogue faction of congress, spurred on by Texas Senator Ted Cruz, attempting to extort a US president. President Obama remains calm despite the hoopla over his Affordable Care Act, which promises millions of uninsured Americans, healthcare.

The rogue faction of tea party conservatives and other sundry rebels is about to hold the US military hostage with no paychecks, along with thousands of soon-to-be furloughed federal workers. I have to wonder how these fine Americans feel about ye good ole’ party (GOP) right about now…

Obama Care will be funded, regardless, however!

Grin Inc.

This is wonderful news.

Unfortunately, I live in Texas, a red state backward in its vision for Americans, thus I have no idea whether I’ll be able to personally apply for healthcare or not, but I’m glad that the rest of you will and have only this to say:

GO OBAMA, GO!

I don’t like or appreciate extortion as a way of meeting one’s goals; it’s a slimy, slippery process that is inclined to backfire. And backfire I think it will.

I do greatly admire my president, though. I think he is brave, reasonable, and rational and I cheer him on for standing up for millions of us who do not have healthcare, who think he is courageous and decent for giving a hoot. Thanks, Mr. President!

Unequally Yolked

Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?

2 Corinthians 6: 14-15

Unequally yolked with unbelievers

Christians are not to bond with unbelievers.

The above passage makes it clear that “inclusivism,” “universalism,” and anything that claims that we’re all eternally going to the same destination is in error. We aren’t.

No matter how much the Christian bible-believer would like to spare the feelings of the non-Christian believer, we can’t do so without calling the Holy Bible a lie or attempting to manipulate it into saying something other than what it clearly says. We cannot water down the bible’s firm counsel in the attempt at sparing the feelings of our unbelieving friends or family.

We’re warned about trying to develop a deep, intimate relationship with an unbeliever. 2 Corinthians tells us that it’s like trying to mix darkness and light, righteousness and lawlessness;  it just won’t work. The two do not mix well. The warning is best adhered to. There are reasons for this.

I can’t help thinking about the immeasurable gulf that exists between myself and one who rebels against what the bible teaches. While we can remain civil and even enjoy one another’s companionship to a degree, the gulf between us is vast and always ever present; I think it must be there for a reason.

I was telling an unbelieving blogger friend of mine that I’ve learned to distance myself from those who don’t believe despite loving them deeply as God would have me. I have had to learn how to do this because again and again I found myself devastated and hurt when I became too close with those who were rebelling against God. Eventually I had to accept and recognize that we could only share so much in common and our relationship would always be compromised because of our different perspectives and lifestyles.

I am to love the unbelieving, but there is a divide between us despite my deep feelings of love and concern.  It’s as if we’re traveling down a similar road when suddenly a fork in that roads appears. We now have to acknowledge that we will not be able to continue the journey together, neither really knowing what is going to happen to the other, but knowing we are separating and going very different ways.

This gets kind of spooky or kind of eerie. We apparently are unable to breach the divide between those who believe and those who do not. Exploring this further, the bible says:

Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?

We already know who Jesus Christ is, but who is Belial? There is a black and white distinction drawn for us between the believer/Christ and the unbeliever/Belial. We are asked what the believer has in common or in harmony with one who does not believe.

English: A woodcarving of Belial and some of h...

In “The War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness,” one of the Dead Sea Scrolls, Belial is the leader of the Sons of Darkness:

“But for corruption thou hast made Belial, an angel of hostility. All his dominions are in darkness, and his purpose is to bring about wickedness and guilt. All the spirits that are associated with him are but angels of destruction.”

In the Dead Sea Scrolls Belial is further contrasted with God. These are the Angel of Light and the Angel of Darkness. The Manual of Discipline identifies the Angel of Light as God himself. The Angel of Darkness is identified in the same scroll as Belial.

The Jewish Greek Septuagint,  later the Old Testament of the early Christian church, generally renders the “sons of Belial” verses in the Hebrew Bible either as “lawless men”, by idioms “sons of the pest”, rather than a personal name “sons of Belial.”

In The Satanic Bible (Earth: The Book of Belial), Belial means “without a master”, and symbolizes independence, self-sufficiency, and personal accomplishment.” (Source)

Belial

Belial (Photo credit: GogDog)

The demon of lies, Belial was acknowledged in the bible as a source of great evil,  and even as the lord of all demons. Some apocrypha label him as the father of Lucifer. Whatever Belial is, he isn’t good. The reader can find more about him here:

Despite the inseparable, great divide between the unbelieving and the believer, we are admonished as Christians to love the unbeliever and show him or her this love graciously.

  1. God wants us to conduct ourselves with wisdom toward unbelievers.
  2. God wants us to make the most of our opportunity with unbelievers.
  3. God wants us to be careful and gracious in our speech with unbelievers.
  4. God wants us to know how to answer everyone.
  5. God wants us to pray for the unbelieving.  (Source)

Food Stamps 2

The below letter was written on September 19th by an Iraq War veteran named Jason. He fought for our country and came home to an America that has left him feeling disenchanted. Jason wrote the letter in response to Republicans voting to cut $40 billion from the food stamp program this past week. He happens to be one of those who is currently counting on food stamps in order to not go hungry.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My name is Jason. I turned 35 less than a week ago. My first job was maintenance work at a public pool when I was 17. I worked 40 hours a week while I was in college. I’ve never gone longer than six months without employment in my life and I just spent the last three years in the military, one of which consisted of a combat tour of Afghanistan. Oh, and I’m now on food stamps. Since June, as a matter of fact.

Why am I on food stamps? The same reason everyone on food stamps is on food stamps: because I would very much enjoy not starving. I mean, if that’s okay with you: Mr. or Mrs. Republican congressman. Mr. or Mrs. Conservative commentator. Mr. or Mrs. “welfare queen” letter-to-the-editor author. Mr. or Mrs. “fiscal conservative, reason-based” libertarian.

I do apologize for burdening you on the checkout line with real-life images of American-style poverty. I know you probably believe the only true starving people in the world have flies buzzing around their eyes while they wallow away, near-lifeless in gutters. Hate to burst the bubble, but those people don’t live in this country. I do. And millions like me.

Millions of people in poverty who fall into three categories. Let’s call them the “lucky” category, since conservatives seem to think people on welfare have hit some sort of jackpot: Those living paycheck to paycheck? They’re a little lucky. Those living unemployment check to unemployment check? They’re a little luckier. Those living 2nd of the month to 2nd of the month? Ding! We’ve hit the jackpot! The 2nd of the month being the time when funds gets electronically deposited onto the EBT card, [at least in NY] for those who’ve never been fortunate enough to hit that $175/month Powerball. I fall into the latter two categories.

But I’ve known people recently — soldiers in the Army — who were in the first and third. They were off fighting in Afghanistan while their wives were at home, buying food at the on-post commissary with food stamps. And nobody bats an eye there, because it’s not uncommon in the military. It’s not uncommon — nor is it shameful. It might be shameful how little service-members are paid, but that’s a separate issue.

The fact remains anyone at a certain income level can find it difficult from time to time to pay for everything. And when you’re poor you learn to make sacrifices. Food shouldn’t be one of them. The whole concept is un-American. People living here, in the greatest country on Earth, with the most abundant resources, should be forced to go hungry because of the intellectual notion of fiscal conservatism and the ideological notion of self-reliance. Are you fucking kidding me?

I didn’t risk my life in Afghanistan so I could come back and watch people go hungry in America. I certainly didn’t risk it so I could come back and go hungry. Anyone who genuinely supports cutting food stamps is not an intellectual or an ideologue — they’re a bully. And nobody likes a bully. Except other bullies.

It’s time for regular Americans to stand up to these bullies. Not cower in the corner, ashamed of needing help. Because if there’s one thing life has taught me, it’s that you never know when you’ll be the one in need.

Christ’s Sacrifice

Some things are true whether you believe them or not.

Christ’s Sacrifice

“He looked around the hill and foresaw a scene.  Three figures hung on three crosses.  Arms spread.  Heads fallen forward.  They moaned with the wind.

Men clad in soldiers’ garb sat on the ground near the trio.  They played games in the dirt and laughed.

Men clad in religion stood off to one side.  They smiled.  Arrogant, cocky.  They had protected God, they thought, by killing this false one.

Women clad in sorrow huddled at the foot of the hill.  Speechless.  Faces tear streaked.  Eyes downward.  One put her arm around another and tried to lead them away.  She wouldn’t leave, “I will stay,” she said softly.  “I will stay.”

All heaven stood to fight.  All nature rose to rescue.  All eternity poised to protect.  But the Creator gave no command.

“It must be done …,”  he said, and withdrew.

But as he stepped back in time, he heard the cry that he would someday scream: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”  He wrenched at tomorrows agony.

The angel spoke again, “It would be less painful …”

The Creator interrupted softly, “But it wouldn’t be love.”

An Agenda to Deceive

In a world where most are intelligent, well read, and knowledgeable about a host of things, why would someone appear with an agenda to deceive?

What would such an individual have to gain? How do we all learn to recognize this kind of agenda now and in the future, even if we don’t believe and are not Christian?

Scripture clearly tells us that in the last days false teachers, false prophets, and even false Christ’s will appear. Eventually some of these will do signs and wonders and may deceive even the very elect of God through their false doctrines and teachings. Christians have to be aware of this and be on the look out for those who are trying to blatantly trick us through false teaching. Why?

False teachers have a motivation; their agenda is anything but godly — they are being led by the god of this world, Satan. False teachers are helping the author of confusion, Satan, either willingly or even unwillingly. They have given permission in their lives at some point and have opened the door to Satan and confusion. They have gotten off that narrow path and have begun wandering in darkness. They are empowered by the father of lies, Satan. Their intent has unintentionally become an agenda to deceive those who may have opportunity to come to Jesus Christ for forgiveness of sins — but they also desire to deceive the very people who love God most, their very own Christian brethren. And deceive they will, if we let them.

We can recognize a false teacher or a false prophet by the very fact that he or she will attempt to negate that which has actual power. The blood of Jesus Christ has power and it can and will save you from your sins if you only reach out and ask for this salvation, calling out to Jesus Christ, and believing and stating that Jesus Christ is your Lord. If you believe that He died on the cross for your sins, that He shed His blood in order to save you, if you ask Jesus Christ for forgiveness of your sins, and you agree that you repent those sins, (desire to change), you will be forgiven and you will have eternal life.

False teachers internally know what has power and what does not. Attempting to negate any of the important parts of the bible that I already mentioned in my last post, should immediately show you the agenda of the false teacher. Anyone who claims to doubt or not believe in Jesus’ death on the cross, His coming to earth in a human. fleshly body, (His divinity), His rising from the dead on the third day, His ascension to the Father, His sovereignty as the son of God, the virgin birth, the miracles Christ did, and various other beams in the structure and foundation of what the apostles of Christ preached, is someone with an agenda to prevent your salvation.

Even if you don’t believe or want the salvation of Jesus Christ, you should be able to spot what’s going on; most people don’t care to be scammed or tricked; they don’t care to appear so foolish. Why allow someone to deny you the very thing you have a right to deny for yourself, or choose for yourself if you decide to. You need to be completely aware of your choices and be informed when making your decisions; the last thing any of us needs is to be misled or tricked by one who has chosen to serve the father of lies, who is in league with the author of confusion.

Satan is sly and he has minions galore to trick mankind because he knows that time is short. Do not be deceived by false teachers and learn how to recognize them. There is no reason on earth why someone would choose to completely neutralize Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for you, except to prevent your salvation. When you see this kind of thing occurring, it should be instantaneous that you say to yourself, “Ahh, another one who is hostile to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He wants to prevent me from the blood-saving-grace of Jesus Christ who died so that I might have eternal life and go before God with an intercessor, so that I am holy in the eyes of God, despite my sinful nature.”

Bingo. This kind of reaction should become second nature as soon as red flashing warning lights in your head start to go off.

If you cannot understand what I’m talking about and cannot spot what I’ve brought forward when it is occurring, you may be confused or already deceived and deluded. There actually is a war occurring for the very souls of mankind. We should all make our choice, informed, rather than tricked and thus having the free gift of salvation stolen from us.

Please remember these passages:

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets (teachers) are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God.” (1 John 4:1-3)
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, and against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand it, the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” (Ephesians 6:1-13)
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. (1 Peter 5:8-9)

There are false teachers galore writing popular, best-selling books. Bishop John Shelby Spong is one such example. Spong denies Jesus Christ came in the flesh. Biblically, according to scripture, this makes Spong writing and teaching falsely. Who said so? The bible said so. Jesus Christ said so, according to the bible.

We have already been warned that we would be bombarded with the false in the last days and we are being quite literally bombarded continuously from every direction possible. It would be funny if it weren’t so absolutely serious. My posts on this topic are for the benefit of those who care where their souls are heading. If you don’t believe you have a soul, perhaps this will not matter to you, but there is the distinct possibility that you may be wrong so if for no other reason, you may want to consider what I’m writing carefully and remember it down the road as time moves on.

Those that read this posting need to be aware that “Bishop” Spong is deluded. He blatantly states in his writings that the bible is “fantasy,” and so is the divinity of Jesus, along with Jesus’ time here in a human fleshly body. The bible is extremely clear, no matter which translation you are reading from, that those who deny that Jesus Christ came in the flesh are antichrist. Seems pretty clear to me. Is this not clear for someone?

Anti-christ means “against Christ.”

Now, I don’t think there’s a translation in the world that can get that wrong, nor can anyone here twist the intent of these words.

Yes, John Shelby Spong is false, and those who desire to learn false teachings will have to lie in the bed that they make for themselves; I don’t intend to, nor will I keep silent while some innocent trusts Spong and reads and believes his garbage through their own naivety. Once I’ve given my input and warning, I feel I’ve given all I can in an honest attempt to let people know who and what they are dealing with.

Rescuing the Gospel from Bishop John Shelby Spong!

http://www.leaderu.com/orgs/probe/docs/spong.html

There are so many other writers who claim Christianity, but who are now reinventing the bible and through their new “revelations,” potentially bringing us a “new gospel.”  Here are just a few that I have researched a little enough to know to approach and read with much caution:

Bart Ehrman – “About nine or ten years ago I came to realize that I simply no longer believed the Christian message. A large part of my movement away from the faith was driven by my concern for suffering. I simply no longer could hold to the view—which I took to be essential to Christian faith—that God was active in the world, that he answered prayer, that he intervened on behalf of his faithful, that he brought salvation in the past and that in the future, eventually in the coming eschaton, he would set to rights all that was wrong, that he would vindicate his name and his people and bring in a good kingdom (either at our deaths or here on earth in a future utopian existence).” Source

Marcus Borg –  believes there was no bodily, physical resurrection of Jesus; this was spiritual instead. Source

Peter Enns – does not believe in the Genesis account of creation, attempts to make Genesis fit into the science/secular perspective of evolution, and furthers this in a vast array of other unorthodox speculations. The problem is how far will he go in his attempt at redefining Christianity? Source

Robert Shuller – New Age psychology mixed with biblical beliefs could potentially become problematic in a lot of various ways. Source

There are, of course, countless others I have not even begun to review.

The point is this:  We have to become aware of what is happening and become wary. Line everything up with the bible if someone recommends a “Christian” author/writer/teacher/preacher. If things don’t line up, take a pass. This is what I recommend. These are not the times to be redefining the bible/the Gospel.

More than 30 years ago, Vance Havner, in his book “Playing Marbles with Diamonds,” offered the following:

“The devil is not fighting religion; he is too smart for that. He is producing a counterfeit Christianity so much like the real one that good Christians are afraid to speak out against it. … We are plainly told in the Scriptures that in the last days men will not endure sound doctrine and will depart from the truth and heap to themselves teachers to tickle their ears. We live in an epidemic of this itch, and popular preachers have developed ear-tickling to a fine art. Today, the angle is to avoid “negative” preaching and accentuate only the positive.”

There Is No Compromise

I haven’t felt the need to write about this topic for a few years, but suddenly I see the same thing is happening yet again; thus it will continue to happen, over and over, no matter where I’m writing, reading,  or interacting. People want to compromise on the bible and change it. People don’t like what it says because it offends. It does not compromise, so people tell us that we will have to. We must become “politically correct.” We must soften as Christians, we must compromise.

It’s the times we’re living in. It’s not coincidence. There are actually “new gospels” being preached over and over, offered by those who wish to give us a kinder, gentler, more updated gospel. Guess what! If you don’t like the old gospel, the powers that be can and will simply spin you a new one! But beware….

Believe it or not, readers, we received a stern warning in the bible in Galatians chapter one, via Paul.

In this part of the bible, Paul is lecturing passionately because apparently the same thing that is happening now was happening then. At that time, Paul was preparing the body of Christ for the trickery they would be exposed to, and thus it’s obvious that we must expect the very same thing and prepare ourselves and one another, just as they did then.

Historically-speaking, some things just don’t change; Satan attempting to trick and deceive the body of Christ is one of the things we can count on until this old Earth passes away and a new one is created.

Now let’s look at what Paul says:

“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all.

Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!

As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!

Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ. Galations 1: 6-12

And again we have yet another warning!

For if he who comes to you would preach another Jesus to you, whom we have not preached to you, or you should receive another spirit which you have not received, or another gospel which you have not received, you may well be persuaded.”  – 2 Corinthians 11:4

Jesus and His disciples were very clear about a few things. We cannot compromise on these:
  • Jesus was born of a virgin and is divine; His divinity cannot be questioned.
  • Salvation is received through Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone. To get to God, one must go through only Jesus Christ.
  • Jesus Christ is divine, the holy Son of God, but also came in a fleshly human body to walk the earth and die for the sins of the world, thus He is indeed both man and God.
  • Jesus Christ was crucified for the sins of the world, rose on the third day, and ascended to the right hand of the Father. There is God the Father, The Holy Spirit, and Jesus Christ the Son.
  • Jesus Christ will return for His church, the Second Coming.
  • If we call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we will be saved.
  • The scriptures are God-breathed, inspired, and sufficient to teach us.

We see these stated again and again for us within the Word:

That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. – Romans 10:9

They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved–you and your household.” -Acts 16:31

You crucified Jesus Christ, but God has brought him back to life. He is the stone that the builders rejected, the stone that has become the cornerstone. No one else can save us. Indeed, we can be saved only by the power of the one named Jesus and not by any other person.” -Acts 4: 10-12

JJesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. – John 14:16

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; – John 11:25

If anyone attempts to nullify or change these words and the plan of All Mighty God to save your soul, recognize what he or she is up to! It’s a trick. It’s a horrific trick to steal away your God-given right to salvation. You have a right to choose for yourself and be saved if you want to be. No one should be fooled or tricked out of it. Remember…

There. is. no. compromise.

Satan would have you believe that there is, though. He wants you to compromise on what the bible says. Who else desires that you not be saved? Who else would do anything he could to prevent your salvation through any means?

View the current and future twisting and mauling of these verses and what they promise with suspicion and wary caution. No one has anything to gain through stealing away our salvation but Satan and those who help him, (whether they know they are helping him or not).

Do not be fooled. There is no compromise. Don’t believe anyone who says there is.

Leaving the Church

English: Trinity Parish Church (Episcopal), Fi...

“Despite having one foot in Generation X, I tend to identify most strongly with the attitudes and the ethos of the millennial generation, and because of this, I’m often asked to speak to my fellow evangelical leaders about why millennials are leaving the church.

Armed with the latest surveys, along with personal testimonies from friends and readers, I explain how young adults perceive evangelical Christianity to be too political, too exclusive, old-fashioned, unconcerned with social justice and hostile to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

I point to research that shows young evangelicals often feel they have to choose between their intellectual integrity and their faith, between science and Christianity, between compassion and holiness.

I talk about how the evangelical obsession with sex can make Christian living seem like little more than sticking to a list of rules, and how millennials long for faith communities in which they are safe asking tough questions and wrestling with doubt.

Invariably, after I’ve finished my presentation and opened the floor to questions, a pastor raises his hand and says, “So what you’re saying is we need hipper worship bands. …”

And I proceed to bang my head against the podium.

Time and again, the assumption among Christian leaders, and evangelical leaders in particular, is that the key to drawing twenty-somethings back to church is simply to make a few style updates  edgier music, more casual services, a coffee shop in the fellowship hall, a pastor who wears skinny jeans, an updated Web site that includes online giving.

But here’s the thing: Having been advertised to our whole lives, we millennials have highly sensitive BS meters, and we’re not easily impressed with consumerism or performances.

In fact, I would argue that church-as-performance is just one more thing driving us away from the church, and evangelicalism in particular.

Many of us, myself included, are finding ourselves increasingly drawn to high church traditions  Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, the Episcopal Church, etc. precisely because the ancient forms of liturgy seem so unpretentious, so unconcerned with being “cool,” and we find that refreshingly authentic.

What millennials really want from the church is not a change in style but a change in substance.

We want an end to the culture wars. We want a truce between science and faith. We want to be known for what we stand for, not what we are against.

We want to ask questions that don’t have predetermined answers.

We want churches that emphasize an allegiance to the kingdom of God over an allegiance to a single political party or a single nation.

We want our LGBT friends to feel truly welcome in our faith communities.

We want to be challenged to live lives of holiness, not only when it comes to sex, but also when it comes to living simply, caring for the poor and oppressed, pursuing reconciliation, engaging in creation care and becoming peacemakers.

You can’t hand us a latte and then go about business as usual and expect us to stick around. We’re not leaving the church because we don’t find the cool factor there; we’re leaving the church because we don’t find Jesus there.

Like every generation before ours and every generation after, deep down, we long for Jesus.

Now these trends are obviously true not only for millennials but also for many folks from other generations. Whenever I write about this topic, I hear from forty-somethings and grandmothers, Generation Xers and retirees, who send me messages in all caps that read “ME TOO!” So I don’t want to portray the divide as wider than it is.

But I would encourage church leaders eager to win millennials back to sit down and really talk with them about what they’re looking for and what they would like to contribute to a faith community.

Their answers might surprise you.”

Hell & How Not to Go There

A reader asked me if I believe in the punishment of hell, of the eternal burning in fire of those who don’t believe, who have rejected God.

I really don’t enjoy writing about or dwelling upon this fact of hell that is described for us and written about at length within the bible, but it is there. I would be remiss if I didn’t discuss hell on this blog. Denial of the existence of hell because it makes me or you uncomfortable is leaving out an important part of the bible and thus not telling you, the reader, the entire story.

Hell is described in many different ways, and not just as of a burning.

Some have described hell as everlasting darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. Some state that it is a place where there is nothingness and no ability to feel the presence of God at all, anymore. Some say the person in hell is conscious of the absence of God — and deal with a sort of eternal emptiness/loneliness. Some believe that the person who goes to hell simply ceases to exist, like an animal who they claim is spiritless. The various theories are interesting and limitless, but in my opinion, if it’s not actually described within the bible, it’s probably not relevant

A very good summation of the facts of what the bible says about hell can be found here. This particular reading is well done and also includes some erroneous views of hell, according to the writing:

  • there is a way to escape hell
  • after death all are somehow saved (universal-ism)
  • people who go to hell just cease to exist (annihilation-ism)

I also appreciate several other readings, one of which I included part of below.

While it’s difficult to imagine God, who loves us as much as He does, sending anyone to hell, it’s more understandable when we grasp that God clearly offers everyone a choice. We can be with Him and with the others who know Him, or we will not be with Him and will be somewhere where others who reject Him are going. He prefers we choose to be with Him, but He leaves the choice up to us.

The bible tells us how to make the choice and why we need to.

Sin is the problem. God is holy and we are sinful and cannot achieve holiness without being rid of sin. Jesus Christ is God’s answer to the sin problem. Belief in Jesus Christ, and acceptance of His death on the cross, as well as repentance of our sins, saves us from the sin problem.

No one has to endure hell. Why would anyone want to? Why would anyone logically choose to reject God and wind up apart from Him if they were instead offered the choice to be with Him? I simply do not know. People do, though. For them, hell is a fact of the end of their life on this earth. Once this is all over, that will be their eternity. This is all there is for these people who have rejected Jesus Christ as their mediator before God.

“The Bible describes hell as a terrifying and horrible place. Hell is described as “eternal fire” (Matthew 25:41), “unquenchable fire” (Matthew 3:12), “shame and everlasting contempt” (Daniel 12:2), a place where “the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:44-49), and “everlasting destruction” (2 Thessalonians 1:9).Revelation 20:10describes hell as a “lake of burning sulfur” where the wicked are “tormented day and night forever and ever.” Obviously, hell is a place we should avoid.

Why does hell even exist, and why does God send some people there? The Bible tells us that God “prepared” hell for the devil and the fallen angels after they rebelled against Him (Matthew 25:41). Those who refuse God’s offer of forgiveness will suffer the same eternal destiny of the devil and the fallen angels. Why is hell necessary? All sin is ultimately against God (Psalm 51:4), and since God is an infinite and eternal being, only an infinite and eternal penalty is sufficient. Hell is the place where God’s holy and righteous demands of justice are carried out. Hell is where God condemns sin and all those who reject Him. The Bible makes it clear that we have all sinned (Ecclesiastes 7:20;Romans 3:10-23), so, as a result, we all deserve to go to hell.

So, how can we not go to hell? Since only an infinite and eternal penalty is sufficient, an infinite and eternal price must be paid. God became a human being in the Person of Jesus Christ (John 1:1,14). In Jesus Christ, God lived among us, taught us, and healed us—but those things were not His ultimate mission. God became a human being so that He could die for us. Jesus, God in human form, died on the cross. As God, His death was infinite and eternal in value, paying the full price for sin (1 John 2:2). God invites us to receive Jesus Christ as Savior, accepting His death as the full and just payment for our sins. God promises that anyone who believes in Jesus (John 3:16), trusting Him alone as the Savior (John 14:6), will be saved, i.e., not go to hell.

God does not want anyone to go to hell (2 Peter 3:9). That is why God made the ultimate, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice on our behalf. If you want to not go to hell, receive Jesus as your Savior. It is as simple as that. Tell God that you recognize that you are a sinner and that you deserve to go to hell. Declare to God that you are trusting in Jesus Christ as your Savior. Thank God for providing for your salvation and deliverance from hell. Simple faith, trusting in Jesus Christ as the Savior, is how you can avoid going to hell!”  (Source)

September 11, 2013

On September 11, 2013, let’s remember the loss of so many on this same day in 2001, by a willingness to truly open ourselves up to the “Gospel of Peace” offered us by the son of God Himself, the Lord Jesus Christ.

How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace

 Romans 10:15

Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword (Mt 26:52)

The weapons with which we fight are not human weapons, but are mighty for God in overthrowing strong fortresses. (2 Co 10:4)

What is the cause of wars and fighting among you? is it not in your desires which are at war in your bodies? 2 You are burning with desire, and have not your desire, so you put men to death; you are full of envy, and you are not able to get your desire, so you are fighting and making war; you have not your desire, because you do not make request for it. (James 4.1-2)

Bless them that persecute you; bless, and curse not. . . . Render to no man evil for evil. . If you can, so far as it depends on you, live at peace with all the world… Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” But if your enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him to drink: for in so doing you shall heap coals of fire upon his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. (Rom. 12. 14)

See that none render unto any one evil for evil; but always follow after that which is good, one toward another, and toward all. (1 Thess 5:15)

Summing up: Be agreeable, be sympathetic, be loving, be compassionate, be humble. That goes for all of you, no exceptions. No retaliation. No sharp-tongued sarcasm. Instead, bless—that’s your job, to bless. You’ll be a blessing and also get a blessing.

Whoever wants to embrace life and see the day fill up with good, here’s what you do: Say nothing evil or hurtful; snub evil and cultivate good; run after peace for all you’re worth. God looks on all this with approval, listening and responding well to what he’s asked; but he turns his back on those who do evil things. (1 Pet 3: 8-12)
