The Perfect Dad – A Devotion

This is a practical, wonderful study of fatherhood on a day we celebrate fathers. It is one of the more sensible essays from a biblical perspective and the Lords point of view. It’s just excellent!

lthomason's avatarPure Devotion

I Corinthians 6:15-18 (NKJV)

And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For youare the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people.”Therefore “Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.”  “I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

Father’s Day is met with mixed reviews for many people. Men will file into church today to be brow beat about their responsibility to care for their children and be that “man” who is there for their kids. There will be “dads” who are honored by…

Blundering Along

I am having one of the more difficult times of my entire life. It’s certainly been one challenge after another for quite sometime now. Thankfully, I know from whence my bread is buttered and who holds the key to my happiness and well-being.

God, through Jesus Christ, will give us a different kind of peace through horrible times and troubles. It’s an acceptance, an eventual calmness, a promise of seeing us through — a certain kind of never-relenting strength.

I only wish I could control when this peacefulness gets away from me and I react carnally; it’s so frustrating when I’m trying to be like Jesus in every facet of my life that I find myself being anything but a lot of the time.  It’s disappointing because I want to please God. I know He understands my troubles though and accepts my falling down again and again.

Forgive me for my utter failings, Lord Jesus. Please help me to do better under the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

Teach me, and keep me humble and pliable so that I can learn well. Never allow me to become too arrogant to apologize and ask forgiveness from those whom I offend and harm through my daily “bull in a china shop” blunderings.

Thank you, my Lord.

Holy Soothsayers

imageBiblical prophecy is an area whereby the ultra-religious have become holy soothsayers and divine interpreters of The Word. Their latest look into our future seems to be an inner certainty that Pope Francis is the “false prophet” spoken about in the book of Revelation. These same godly fortune tellers assume President Obama is the antichrist, or that the beast is waiting just around the corner, biding his time before popping out to wreak havoc.

I’ve amused myself thinking about Hillary Clinton winning the presidency in 2016 and how wonderful it will be to finally not have a president be accused of being the beast, as antichrist is supposed to be male. This means that Hillary is a safe vote for those of you who stress about these kinds of concerns.

Anyway, evidently the Pope has erred by allowing prayers of Islam to be prayed for the first time ever at the Vatican;never mind that it’s all about brokering peace where none has been before. The rumors are running rampant that the Church and the Muslims are in a conspiracy to create the new “one world religion” wherein all will worship the beast and eventually bow down and take the mark of satan himself.

(sigh)image

I remember when I thought seriously about these kind of absurdities; sometimes I couldn’t sleep because of anxiety and fear over whether or not I would recognize the mark of the beast and how to make sure I didn’t accidentally agree to take it. Eventually I realized that making myself and everyone else fearful and worried wasn’t God’s will for my life as a Christian — nor is it God’s will for anyone else’s life either.

God told us not to worry, fear, or stress. He recommended we keep our eyes open, stay informed, and trust Him. Writing daily posts to terrify and warn others about what they are powerless to do anything about wasn’t on His itinerary. We are instead led to think on good, lovely, inspiring things. We are to encourage and love everyone…always love, and let our lights shine. Stirring up angst and anxiety seems like something satan’s team would be more into.image

Slurring the Pope and the sitting President isn’t loving to me, is it to you? Both these men claim Christianity and the accuser of Christian brethren is and has always been satan, not God..not the godly. Hmm.

I continue to watch world events playing out cautiously. There are some things that seem so crystal clear to me now, though. The truly godly among us make me feel loved, safe, blessed, and not stressed. People who make me feel nervous, afraid, fearful and worried about the future are not Christ-like; their words or writings are not uplifting, nor do they make me think deeply; they make me sigh and want to retreat back to prayer and the safety of the proverbial arms of my Father in Heaven.

Gospel of Fear

God is love, and he that dwells in love dwells in God, and God in
him. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness
in the day of judgment, because as He is, so are we in this world.
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. Because
fear has torment (punishment). He that fears is not made perfect
in love. We love Him because He first loved us. (I John 4:16-19)”

The following reading discusses  the “gospel of fear:”

We are afraid of God, John says, if His love is not perfected in
us. And this fear has to do with “punishment.” We will be afraid of
God because we will think that He is One who wants to punish us,
rather than save and redeem us.

In contrast, if God’s love is “perfected” — (Greek: matured)
— in us, then we will have “boldness in the day of judgment.”
Why? Because we will know God loves us and is NOT out to
punish us. God is always seeking His best for us, and always
working towards redemptive ends.

Thus, we see again WHY Christians have a wrong fear of God:
Rather than know He loves us, we see Him as a God who is out to
punish us. And so we are afraid of Him.

The Gospel of Fear

The gospel which most of us have grown up with simply verifies
this wrong concept of God to us. Rather than a gospel of grace,
many of us have heard a “gospel of fear.” We were told that, yes,
God so loved the world that He sent Jesus to die for us. But we
had better believe it or God is going to punish us by sending us to
hell! And then piled on top of that we were handed a list of rules
to obey under this same threat of punishment. All of this, right in
the middle of sermons and teachings about the grace and love of
God!

This “gospel” is, of course, not THE gospel. The real gospel of
Jesus Christ is not a threat of punishment if you don’t receive
Christ. The real gospel tells us that we are ALREADY dead. So
Jesus came to offer us LIFE. He came to do everything for us that
we cannot do for ourselves. And yes, if we refuse it, God will
judge us. But He won’t need to “add” some kind of punishment.
He will simply judge us worthy of our own choice to die.

The “gospel of fear” is one of the biggest lies which has ever
infiltrated the body of Christ. It gained public entrance once
church leadership sought to control those in the church for
financial gain, and out of a desire for power. They sought to
control by demanding obedience from people under threat of
God’s punishment upon them. And it was easy to get people to
believe it, because, by nature, we are fearful creatures.”

Don’t Tell Them Jesus Loves Them!

Don’t tell them Jesus loves them ’till your ready to love them too.

Oh suffering soul, crying out for love
In a world that seldom cares
See the hungry heart longing to be filled
Much more than our prayers
And a young girl sells herself on Seventh Avenue
And you hear her crying out for help,
“My God, what will we do?”

Don’t tell them Jesus loves them till you’re ready to love them too
Till your heart breaks from the sorrow and the pain they’re going through
With a life full of compassion may we do what we must do
Don’t tell them Jesus loves them till you’re ready to love them too

Oh, the desperate man
Are we reaching for the souls that are sinking down in sin?
Oh, cry for the child
We’ve lost our passion for the lost and there are billions left to win

And another forty thousand children starve to death today
Would we risk all we have to see what some of them say

Don’t tell them Jesus loves them till you’re ready to love them too
Till your heart breaks from the sorrow and the pain they’re going through
With a life full of compassion may we do what we must do
Don’t tell them Jesus loves them till you’re ready to love them too

Why have we waited so long to show them Jesus lives
To share salvation’s song
Why have our hearts become so proud that we fail to see
To love them is to love God

And a young girl sells herself on Seventh Avenue
And you hear her crying out for help,
“My God, what will we do?”

Don’t tell them Jesus loves them till you’re ready to love them too
Till your heart breaks from the sorrow and the pain they’re going through
With a life full of compassion may we do what we must do
Don’t tell them Jesus loves them till you’re ready to love them too

The Social Gospel

By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.–1John 3:10

“The Social Gospel” is spoken about with distaste and disdain by those who are blatantly right wing politically-motivated. These muttering about “The Social Gospel” are fierce in their intensity to denigrate it so they can excuse themselves from siding with the greedy.

The phrase “thou doth protest too much” seems to come to mind as I listen to inane excuses and pitiful protestations that Jesus cared more for the soul than He did for the state of a man’s body. Anything can be taken out of context and miserably twisted as the concept of the Social Gospel has been, but God doesn’t appreciate His word being mauled and mutilated for greed’s sake. God is clear about how He will handle those who oppressed the poor, who sought after greed, who exploited the less fortunate.

Jesus said, ‘if you did it to the least of these, you did it unto me!’

The bible specifies our behavior with one another on this earth. It is very clear again and again. Read the numerous scripture that address this very thing:

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. –James 2:14-18

But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. –1John 3:17-18

Whoever gives to the poor will not want, but he who hides his eyes will get many a curse. — Proverbs 28:27

They have grown fat and sleek. They know no bounds in deeds of evil; they judge not with justice the cause of the fatherless, to make it prosper, and they do not defend the rights of the needy.–Jeremiah 5:28

“Is this not the fast which I choose, To loosen the bonds of wickedness, To undo the bands of the yoke, And to let the oppressed go free And break every yoke? “Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry And bring the homeless poor into the house; When you see the naked, to cover him; And not to hide yourself from your own flesh? “Then your light will break out like the dawn, And your recovery will speedily spring forth; And your righteousness will go before you; The glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. –Isaiah 58:6-8

A righteous man knows the rights of the poor; a wicked man does not understand such knowledge.—Proverbs 29:7

The people of the land have practiced extortion and committed robbery. They have oppressed the poor and needy, and have extorted from the sojourner without justice. –Ezekiel 22:29

Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered.— Proverbs 21:13

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. –James 1:27

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.–Matthew 23:25

Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.–Ezekial 16:14

If your religion does not include a love for the oppressed and the broken-hearted, your religion is in vain. If you stand with the rich, the greedy, corporations, and Wall Street against the common working poor, will God look kindly down upon you? I think not. Are you fooling Him? No, I think not.

No way.

social gospel:
noun: Protestantism.
a movement in America, chiefly in the early part of the 20th century, stressing the social teachings of Jesus and their applicability to public life.
Origin:
1915–20

Social Gospel definition

A religious movement that arose in the United States in the late nineteenth century with the goal of making the Christian churches more responsive to social problems, such as poverty and prostitution. Leaders of the movement argued that Jesus’ message was as much about social reform as about individual approaches to salvation.

The American Heritage® New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition

Social justice is based on the concepts of human rights and equality. The Bible supports social justice with regard to the plight of the poor and the afflicted, orphans and widows and people unable to support themselves. The nation of Israel was commanded by God to care for the less fortunate in society. Jesus told us to care for those who are hungry and thirsty, who are sick or in prison, the outcasts of society (Matthew 25:34-40).

Jesus reflected God’s sense of justice by bringing the gospel message to the lower rungs of society. The wealthy also need to hear the gospel message, but it is noteworthy that the well-to-do, the upstanding and respected members of society are less likely to see their utter spiritual bankruptcy before God and embrace the message of the gospel.

Christians are under a personal obligation to love their neighbours as they love themselves (Matthew 22:39). We have a responsibility to be good stewards of our own wealth because all wealth comes from and belongs to God. Christians should take a God-centered approach to social justice, not a man-centered approach. We see Christ Jesus as our Saviour. When He returns, He will restore justice. In the meantime, Christians are to express God’s love and justice by showing kindness in practical ways to those less fortunate.

Who Are You, God?

bridge to heavenSo many people have opinions on who God is. I guess we really won’t know whose thoughts are accurate until we stand before God for ourselves and have a long overdue face-to-face chat.

Many Christians feel that we can know God through His word, the Holy Bible – I believe this is truth, to an extent. God could never reveal who and what He is in His entirety through anything as limited as a book, though. Despite its beauty, the bible still leaves us with questions no matter how many times we read it. God’s word offers us glimpses into God, but I have no doubt that there is so much more that we can’t and don’t know about God. Our human minds are not equipped to understand the full scope of God, even if we were open to learning everything there is to know. This is why it disturbs me when absolutes are applied to God by the well-meaning, who consider themselves the experts on any and everything God thinks, believes, and feels.

I know there is more to God than what the majority of the religious minds believe they think they know. For example, why would God create some of His children with both male and female private parts? Why are some of God’s kids born with confusion about their gender? Why do young children find themselves experiencing same sex attraction through no fault of their own? The allegedly informed will attempt to offer various opinion through their particular interpretation of the bible, but when their take on these things turns God into someone unkind, vicious, and unfair, internally I know they are IN ERROR. I trust my own gut on that as well as my relationship with God.

I will not allow other people’s black and white, in-the-box thinking to confuse what I already sense inside and have known since I was a child. God is not mean. God will not turn anyone away who sincerely wants to know and love Him; I don’t care what their sins are initially either. God will make a way for them to come to Him and deal with their sin in His time between He and them. No one should ever be afraid to come before God in prayer exactly as he or she is in this moment. God loves us, sins and flaws galore. People on this earth are much harsher and more judgmental than God will ever be. God is compassionate and understanding. Truly.
